Top Drawer must be waiting for further developments. SC lost to USD on the womens side 1-0. Okay! SC dropped from 12 to 21 but USD only jumped from 44 to 42.
They seem reluctant to give anyone from the WCC except Portland and Santa Clara much credit.

Portland women beat CSUN 2-1 in Northridge. The Matadors almost tied it up at the end with one off the woodwork. The Pilot fans on "Pilot Nation" didn't seem too concerned. Are the Pilots vulnerable this year?

In addition to being on the WCC preseason all conference team Julie Gallaudet shows up on the Top Drawer WCC top twenty players. Cori McGovern joins her there as the only Lions included.

Lions won with an exciting finish in a game that could have easily slipped away. Brittany Jagger made three saves for the Lions in the second half on shots that were all but in the net. The post and crossbar helped her on at least one other occasion. She kept the Lions even until the game winner came with three minutes left.
I'm sure Coach Mallia and staff are happy with the win but Denver sure put a lot of pressure on the Lion defense in the second half. The Lions have talent in the back for sure but owe their goalie a big thank you for keeping them in this one.
I arrived late and I missed the first goal, it might have been credited to Tawni Martino, the second goal was a collaboration of many starting with the throw in from Gilmer a bicycle kick and then other Lions crashing in on the goal. If the announcer ever gave anyone credit for the goal I never heard it.

Julie Gallaudet played well and made a nice run early in the second half getting loose down the middle with the ball. She broke through behind the defense and her shot bounced off the far post after cleanly beating the keeper.
I only saw Lily Sorentino in the game for a few minutes in the second half. She was subbed out after an apparent injury to a lower leg. Hopefully she is able to continue playing.
I was impressed with the overall play of the Lions. There were a few moments of terror for the fans and they made it a bit harder on themselves giving up a rather soft goal in the first half but they made the plays necessary to win the game.

Martino gets the credit for both LMU goals. I couldn't see the second clearly from my position but she got her head to the bicycle kick cross from McGovern and put it in. Denver tried to deflect it away unsuccessfully.

The WCC is again proving to be a tough conference, the record so far is 20-3-2. But we knew that already.
The box score from Bakersfield shows that Coach has pretty much settled on his lineup. Seven starters played the entire 90 minutes. Included in that number are two of his freshman, Martino and Gilmer.
The absence of Sorentino's name from the sub list may be indicative of the seriousness of her injury.

Why did the coaches at NCSAA divide the regional womens ranking for the west into two groups? Now it's the west and the Pacific. Two conferences in each group. The Pac 10 and Mountain West in one and the WCC and Big West in the other. Is it so diluted a result that it is remains meaningless? Just run the computer more often to calculate the RPI, wouldn't that be better?

The Lions are rated tied for fifth in the West region. What does that really mean? I'm not sure if it means much.
Would it have been better to leave it like before even though the west was dominated by the Pac 10? Or have a West ex Pac 10 region and see how everybody else compares.
USD shows up above Santa Clara in the region but behind them on the national poll. Maybe because the regional voters have a better handle on local teams?
Martino has already grabbed attention in the WCC getting player of the week honors for her three goals. She is quick and can really take advantage of her opportunities.

Lions won in Utah and won again on Sullivan Field against Tenn/Martin 2-0. We were up1-0 at halftime thanks to another freshman goal. Darien got her first!
I only saw the second half and it started off slowly. The Lions increased the pressure and had several good chances as the half wore on.
Julie finally broke through on a run down the right and with a change of pace crossed a great ball to the head of Nickey Ha. She hammered in the second goal.
Lily saw some action in the second half and looks like she's not bothered by her previous injury. That can only mean good things to come for the Lions with another threat up front.
