Just two weeks to Mens Soccer ! The Lions are picked to finish fourth by the WCC coaches. The men didn't have anyone on the all conference pre season team either. The boys may have something to say about that by seasons end.
Lots of changes this year after losing all the seniors to graduation, I'm sure the coaches will have it figured out by game day.
Lots of games this preseason against the Pac 6-8-10 whatever and UCSB visits too. That will be a game to see!

The big Red from Cornell visited yesterday and left with a 2-0 victory. Cornell fielded a team mainly of upperclassmen, the Lions one of underclassmen with a few veterans. The Lions are searching for answers and connections to become dangerous upfront attacking the goal. It seemed Cornell's defense was never pressured from a sustained attack. Once the Lions turn that around things will improve.

The Lions started WCC action today at Saint Mary's and came out with a tie after leading 2-1 until the 86th minute. I'm sure they wished they could have held on for the win but a road tie against the defending champs is a good start for the Lions second season. Boland and Felix had the goals for LMU!

The Lions battled Santa Clara today to a scoreless draw to continue their unbeaten streak. The first 90 minutes was entertaining enough but the drama and excitement was really racheted up in the two overtime periods. The Lions have been playing well of late and came out determined to win this one in extra time. The Broncos matched their intensity and both squads had several chances to win in the last 20 minutes.

The Lions finished their season with a win over Saint Marys today 4-2 to continue their unbeaten streak. The Gaels are solid and made it deep in the tournament last season. A very nice way to send the seniors out and set the table for next year. The Lions have a young team for sure and it took a while for them to find a way to make things click. They have had it going to close out the season. The Lions are talented and will only be better next season. GO LIONS!

Congratulations to unranked conference foes USD for their victory over the bruins in Westwood. The bruins have been ranked in the stratosphere all year and were seeded 6th in the tournament. The Toreros blasted them back to reality with a 5-2 shellacking in case you missed it and move on in the tournament after getting past Northridge. UCLA Coach Salcedo was quoted on the bruin website as saying we had an off night on the wrong night seemingly giving little credit to the efforts of the little WCC school from San Diego. The reality of the situation is that the bruin opponent knocked you down and bloodied your lip when it came time to play the game. In the holiday spirit I'll surmise he had more to say in unpublished comments about how well the Toreros played and deserved the win rather than making excuses for the bruin loss.
The bruins may have been guilty of being unprepared for USD after looking at their press clippings and reading the polls all season long. The bruins are good but the game proved that USD was better. The polls in college soccer are sometimes interesting but have to be weighed with a grain of salt.

I know the championship committee does a good job at selecting the 48 teams in the tournament. That is the politically correct thing to say. But every year it seems there are inequities that reveal themselves. The conference champs all get in, not much to complain about there. But that doesn't leave much room for at large berths with only 48 teams. Especially this year when 7 of them go to one conference, the Big East and 4 to the ACC. Conference USA, the Big Ten and the Atlantic 10 all got three extra. Me thinks that's a bit much. The argument is that the selections are based on rpi scores and geography. The rpi formula is skewed to the East and unless some noted scientist from Cal Tech or JPL convinces me otherwise, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Is the soccer played back there that superior? I think not. What coach from the Big West, Pac12, MWSF or WCC agrees with that? None, especially during recruitment. So how does a MVC team like SIUE get overlooked? Creighton the Champ is in and as usual doing well in the tournament. Southern Illinois U Edwardsville doesn't have the name recognition of the teams in the power conferences but they play exciting soccer and have a 35 rpi. But the MVA only got one slot, their number two team, SIEU didn't get a bid. Something's wrong there! Same goes for the BW and the WCC. The argument for the WCC is the win over 6th seeded UCLA and Saint Marys tournament performance last year. The battle for the WCC spot goes down to the last weekend every year. Santa Clara finished only a point behind USD in league standings, but no room for them either with a 54 rpi. The Lions derailed the Broncos chances with a tie at home on the last weedend and they are still smarting from that one.
It comes down to money I guess. It costs too much money to fund transportation for a 64 team tournament and soccer doesn't generate the revenue. Except the women have a 64 team field for soccer. Where do they get the money and they still have sour grape arguments like this when their tournament is selected.
One thing a 64 team field eliminates is the huge first round buy advantage that 16 seeded teams receive. Not only do the other 32 teams have to survive a first round match but then have to travel to the seeded team's venue. The Big East alone got 5 seeds. It gives the appearance of stacking the deck in their favor.
The same arguments every year.
I'll just have to keep rooting for the Blue Jays and Toreros in this years tournament.

Happy Thanksgiving! Both the Blue Jays and Toreros are on to the final eight!
USD got by #11 Tulsa 2-1 in Regulation. #12Creighton advanced on PKs over #5 Akron.
And number 1 seeded Notre Dame fell to #16 Indiana for all the Big East fans. The Irish will have to be happy with playing for the national title in American Football this year! I'm sure they will be okay with that.
#3 Big East Georgetown is next for the Toreros, and Creighton gets #4 BE UConn.

usdtoreros.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/120112aaa.htmlUSD's run ends on the road against Georgetown. Despite leading 1-0 in the 49th minute they fall 3-0. The above link recaps the game. The WCC 's lone entry has been eliminated in the quarter finals the last two years. We can still cheer for our friends from Creighton, they move on to the final four.

Indiana wins 1-0 over the Hoyos in final. Trying to find balance with the 8th program championship for Indiana over the Big East division champion Hoyas. Georgetown is Jesuit so I'm conflicted given the Big East had so many berths. In fairness you can't blame that on the Hoyas themselves considering their season. If you watched you saw a good game and the Hoyas had some chances including one in the last minute off the crossbar.
Things are done for now in socceer, but things are looking up for LMU soccer given the advancements made by both Lion programs. Before we know it the Lions will be back on the field next fall.
