2014-2015 ScheduleGreendoberman already cited today’s article in the Breeze re Mike Dunlap but I thought next years schedule deserved a new thread, which we can update as new info becomes available. Two Pac 12 teams on the schedule, USC and Arizona State, strengthens our RPI nicely. The Pac 12 looks like it has 2 teams in the Sweet 16 this season, albeit not USC which is another matter. Here’s Dunlap’s snapshot philosophy on scheduling: “Q: Someone like Dan Monson at Long Beach State has recently gone to the extreme of playing a lot of big programs on the road to prepare his team for Big West Conference play. What’s your philosophy in constructing a schedule as a head coach? A: There’s a mathematical balance to it all, and there’s no benefit to playing the toughest schedule in the world and losing eight in a row. You’re factoring in the injury side of things as you’re thinking about going to Kentucky for a $140,000 payday for your program. If you are that kind of guy who will do the power ranking and pound away, I’m not a proponent of that. You don’t want to go the other way either. I’d rather have a softer schedule and build someone inside out as far as confidence goes. When you do get smacked, you hopefully can handle it. Our schedule next year includes USC and Arizona State on the road. It’s not impossible but you can see where we could get pounded there a little bit. “ www.dailynews.com/sports/20140322/q-and-a-how-loyola-marymount-new-basketball-coach-mike-dunlap-has-lapped-back-to-a-familiar-spot

Throw in 3 out of this group: Wichita State, DePaul, Hawaii, Colorado, Nebraska, Ohio, George Washington. Of those teams, 4 made it into the Dance. Hawaii might threaten for it next season and Ohio was just an NCAA team last year. Obviously the Shockers will be down, Colorado may have some guys go to the draft, but GW and Nebraska seem like up and comers.
Figure Arizona State, USC, 3 from that group and that's 5 very solid Non-Conference opponents with name recognition. Of the 7 games left, there will be probably the usual 4 or 5 from the Big West/Big Sky combination.

I hope LMU ponies up and buys us some home games like the rest of the wcc so we don't have to go on the road so much like this last season.

Even if we don't get another name school on our schedule, we have more name schools on our schedule than we have had in quite awhile. I thought Pitt was set up as a home-and-home. Great if we can host the Panthers. I'd like to see one more road trip to some place east of the Mississippi with one game against a BCS team and one game against another mid-major. It doesn't have to be Florida or Ohio State. I'm fine with a typical second division team from a BCS league, but I think the Eastern Time Zone exposure would be good. It would also be good to get the guys into a big arena like many of the BCS teams have back there.
If we can get Pitt and maybe one other decent school to come to Gersten to help hype the team, and then fill in with Big West, WAC or Big Sky teams; then I think we have a good schedule. Maybe this is too ambitious for Coach Dunlap, but I think it's do-able by targeting some schools that maybe seem to be a bit down for next year but still have the "brand name."

Add Stanford to the mix on December 17 at Stanford. That's another very good challenge.
