One point of comparison is their loss to a very good Saint Mary’s team 82-74. This season, they lost a few significant players but their top two scorers will return to give the Lions fits. This will be our second real challenge this weekend and should us an indication of the team’s prospects (if Evan isn’t suspended again) for the season. USD plays our same opponents on Friday and Saturday, which will be another indicator. Gametime: Saturday, Nov 15, Gersten, 5 pm.

Update on the Broncos' second exhibition game:" Broncos Run Past Orediggers 103-63Anthony Drmic scored 17 points to pace five Broncos in double figures James Webb III had 15 points and eight rebounds Nov. 7, 2014 Anthony Drmic scored 17 points to lead Boise State men's basketball past Montana Tech Friday, in the Broncos' second exhibition game. Drmic was one of five Broncos in double figures and shot 6-for-8 from the floor to pace an efficient Boise State offense. The Broncos shot 59.3 percent from the floor, connecting on 32-of-54 field goals. They were 13-for-22 (59.1 percent) from three-point range. Boise State held Montana Tech to 37.3 percent from the floor (19-for-51) and forced 22 turnovers. Montigo Alford saw the floor for the first time. For Alford, a transfer from the College of Southern Idaho, it was his Boise State debut and he did not take long to impress. The 5-foot-9 guard tallied four assists in just 10 minutes of play as he works back from offseason shoulder surgery. Alford quickly caught the attention of the everyone in Taco Bell Arena with his up-tempo play and precision passing. "How quick is Tigo?" asked Drmic. "He's fun to play with. He gets those passes you don't even think are there." Another new Bronco took on a bigger role than in the first exhibition game. Freshman David Wacker started at center for Boise State. Wacker played 19 minutes and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Saturday evening Boise State is a 6.5 point favorite vs the Lions. Expect a physical game, an opportunity for Godwin, Patson and Petr to again show their wares. These guys played tough against USD but less diciplined (not unlike the Redhawks) than the Lions. They have size but seem less athletic than the Redhawks. We have to guard the 3 point shot of Drmic who poured in 21 for the Broncos.
As much as I admire the odds makers, they had Pepperdine as 4 point underdogs to Fresno State and the Waves won by 15.
Personally, I think our game matches up better against the Broncos than we did vs the Redhawks especially with "cool-head" Dunlap commanding the bench.

May be I'm still hung over from our win yesterday. We had to go way back to last December's BYU game for our last comparable fix. But I like our chances today too. I saw the last half of the Bronko's USD game and am sure we are in for another tussle but we are at home and have enough confidence plus talent to get the job done. I also like SEMO to beat USD (and almost certainly to beat the spread); I have an abiding confidence that the standard of performance institutionalized by Coach Grier will produce yet another loss. After all, why expect anything more when you are only paying the guy $650K? Still they do have that one shooter, SEMO better remember to guard him.

Personally, I think Grier gets quite a few wins more than he should with the talent he has. He's had some impressive wins since being in San Diego and always with a mediocre roster. My problem with him is that he has a hard time latching on to more than one or two high caliber players at a time.

A few first half notes.
-Dunlap does a good job of getting Payne into scoring positions. I like that he's allowing evan to post up a little bit and take advantage of his man. -Siame had a couple nice moves in the first half (shot 4/5 from the field for 8 pts and 3 boards in the first half). He had a quick post move to bank it inside and then towards the end of the half did something pretty unexpected, a short/midrange fadeaway that hit nothing but net. We're seeing why this guy was so highly touted. He oozes potential. For a guy playing his first couple games of division 1 basketball he's playing with a good amount of confidence and doesn't look like a freshman bigman. A lot of times with bigmen you worry their size allowing them to be complacent. I don't really question Siame's "fire in the belly." He genuinely looks like he loves playing basketball out there (even if it's just setting a nice hard screen). Sometimes he might even be a little overactive (there was a broken down play where he intercepted a pass near the peremeter intended for hayes). He'll have his up and down moments this year but I think it's safe to say Patson has a promising career ahead of him. I remember reading how Herman was the bigman to look for this year but Siame has outplayed him through 3 halves so far. -The three man rotation of Mornar, Godwin, and Siame has improved our interior defense by leaps and bounds. This has translated to much better overall defense and rebounding because our guards don't have to provide as much help defense.

Fair assessment We need our guards to get in the offense from the perimeter (besides Patne I mean)

Well that was a disappointing final 10 minutes.
Godwin had a nice fadeaway J and I love how many touches he's getting inside. He had a behind the back past that was one of the better one's I've seen recently, at any level of basketball.
We went through an awful scoring drought w/o any made field goals for about 4-5 minutes but did a decent job of staying aggressive to get to the FT line and keep it close. There were some tough calls against us (and no calls) in that stretch but we really didn't lose this game until the final five minutes. I liked that we didn't allow them to gain momentum and matched their press with our own but we really need to improve our press. We had a couple of breakdowns that led to easy baskets. Towards the end of the game the offensive execution flailed. In addition, our interior defense got stretched out when they started hitting threes and we allowed way too many easy buckets in the final 10 minutes.
I have no idea what Marin Mornar was doing defensively in the second half. He had a nice game otherwise but the boise state player (duncan) absolutely torched us from 3. Mornar continually was slouching off of this guy, even when he was 4/8 from three. Again and again he'd gamble and drop off of his man camping at the 3pt line. His 3pt shooting brought them back into the game.
Duncan made his 5th three pointer on this exact play with mornar dropping 10-12 feet of of him. That 3 was the one that really put the game out of reach.
All in all the game was still positive. We played well for 35 minutes but looked like a young team in the final 5.

The best part of the game was Patson getting his sea legs.
The guy wants to be on the court - you can see it in his demeanor - and he has a developing offensive game that will improve with on-court experience.
Godwin did contribute a lot tonight on both ends but I still shudder when he puts the ball on the ground. He does make his free throws like no ones business, which is a real plus.
Guards need to contribute more scoring from the perimeter; today, Deji was 0-2, Hayes 0-3, Humphries 3-7 and Payne 5-12. Humphries and Deji had tough games yesterday going 3-9 and 3-8 respectively so maybe Dunlap discouraged them from shooting. But time and again, they shunned the perimeter shot as did Humphries tonight until late in the game. We need them to shoot and score, not wrecklessly but within reason. Their shooting shyness put too much pressure on our inside guys to score and allowed the Broncos to focus their defense inside, which hurt our game overall.
Perhaps motivated by no one else stepping up to the plate on offense, Evan reverted to his old ways of forcing things which led to two consecutive turnovers at a key point late in the game. Dunlap did pull him at that point but Evan was soon back as we really needed his offense. Evan is such a talent and we need his game but he still needs to pick his moments sometimes.
This game was a good learning experience for the squad and the coaches. As uncurse noted, we need to work on the press from both sides: we were less than spectacular on trying to break the Broncos pressure and when we pressed the Broncos got too many easy lay ups especially late in the game.
A dissappointing loss (not to the odds makers), but a fun game to watch in any case.
On to Arizona State for our next game!

Well stated uncurse. I think this squad is going to have to go thru games like tonight and learn painful lessons from them. We have guys learning to be leaders, guys learning to be starters, guys learning to play D-1 ball, etc.. No matter the amount of practice - I believe the in game situations will ultimately help the squad develop as a whole. Five poor minutes...shoot, 2 poor minutes can doom you in a basketball game. ASU up next
