Ironlion identified this recruit; I thought it might be useful to give him his own thread.
Terrence Phillips
PG, 5’11” 170 Class of 2015 Oak Hill Academy
Scouts rating: 79, 3-star, ranked #5 PG in California
Scouting Report ESPN Analyst Updated 09/15/2014
Strengths: Point guard who understands what it means to run the show on both ends of the floor. Has speed and quickness alike and can create tempo on demand. Unique ability to make good decisions with ball even when in first gear. Passer and facilitator first and foremost but shoots a good ball from three, can rise up for pull-ups, and always capable of getting a piece of the paint. Tools to be a defensive pest as well.
Weaknesses: His lack of size will be more of a factor in a half-court game at the next level than it is right now, but he already has a hard time finishing plays in traffic. He'll have to prove he's capable of holding the line of his drive while going through contact and also capable holding up more physical guards on the defensive end of the floor as well.
Bottom Line: He lacks ideal size but he's a true point guard with versatile tools to impact the game in a variety of ways, and the type of tough competitor that any coach would want running his team.
Offers from (per ESPN): Auburn, East Tennessee State, Western Kentucky
As to his "weakness," any number of PGs his size have held their own in the WCC so this is not a show stopper to me. He is from Oak Hill Academy, one of the premier high school athletic venues in the U.S.

Some news items on Phillips: “ Pangos All-American Camp recap June, 2, 2014 By Joel Francisco | ESPN Insider Most improved Terrence Phillips 2015, PG, 5-10, 160 pounds Status: Phillips claims offers from Western Kentucky, St. Joe's and Georgia State.” insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncbrecruiting/on-the-trail/post?id=10467“ Wrapping up the final day at Hoophall January, 20, 2014 By Adam Finkelstein | ESPN Insider Surprise performance: Terrence Phillips (Mouth of Wilson, Va./Oak Hill) The junior point guard emerged as the surprise top performer for Oak Hill. He’s a point guard who runs his team on both ends of the floor and has the jets to be a virtual one-man fast break at any point. While he typically plays a pass-first style (9 assists vs. only 2 turnovers), he’s capable of getting his own shot in all three ranges, as he can shoot a good ball from 3 and can rise up in the mid-range area and accelerate into the paint.” insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncbrecruiting/on-the-trail/post?id=8280#AskCoachB: Talking Terrence PhillipsApril, 4, 2014 By Paul Biancardi @trealo_G: @paulbiancardi what u think about Brandon Jennings younger brother Terrance Phillips as a prospect I think he a mid-major PG #askcoachB Currently a junior, Terrence Phillips was inserted into the starting line up this season when Shelton Mitchell went down with an injury. Phillips led his team to a No. 6 seed in the Dick's Sporting Goods High School National Tournament. I like Phillips' quickness in the open floor and his ability to drive and kick in the half court. He needs to become better at scoring, especially at making open 3-pointers. Right now his recruiting interest is coming more from the mid-majors. He lives in Atlanta, and Georgia State has been on him hard. Virginia Tech was interested before its recent coaching change. At this point he is a mid-major point guard with the ability to play high-major basketball if the jump shot and decision-making improve. He does bring energy, which coaches love.” espn.go.com/blog/ncbrecruiting/on-the-trail/post/_/id/9545/askcoachb-talking-terrence-phillips

He's Brandon Jennings brother? Jennings went to Dominguez before finishing at Oak Hill himself. Wonder if Phillips is from Los Angeles?

I think Phillips was in Georgia before transferring to Oak Hill, deduced from some material I read.

Sounds to me like he could be a freshman starter for us. That should be enticing for him.

Last years recruit Kyron Cartwright, who decommited with our coaching change, is the starting PG for Providence. Both are about the same size and play similar games but it seems Phillips is a bigger threat on offense. Would be a welcome signing. Maybe we can pull our a win over the Waves and impress him? (assuming he's at the game tonight)

Terrance is a way better pg than anyone on the roster now. Mizzou will be hard to recruit against though

Well unless the students are back from break early and either bribed or otherwise coerced into attending the game I fear attendance, even if possibly beefed up by fans from nearby Pepperdine, will be something around 2,000 at most. Mizzou averages 10,000 a game and boasts a 15,000 seat home court. So I have mixed feelings about what the impact of him attending the game might be.

Gotta sell him on CMD's NBA experience and Los Angeles over Springfield, Missouri

Speaking of PG's though, not to go off topic on this thread, but Simon has a lot to improve on, he get's to the rim better than I expected but then he just dribbles out or gets stuck or throws the ball at our big's feet. Replacing AI with him is like trading in your Bentley for a smart car. I do realize he is freshman though, making lots of adjustments on the court and off. I am far from giving up on him, I see a lot of potential, his current play is a bit frustrating, especially when you have been spoiled with a Bentley the last 4 years.

Mizzou is located in Columbia, near KC. Springfield is in the middle of the state; makes sort of a difference.

Ah you are right, Columbia is what I meant to say. I've actually been to the campus, i always get the two mixed up. I stand corrected. It's a pretty cool college town, but still 2 hours from a major city...it's still no LMU campus or Los Angeles....let's hope he has a strong preference for the beach!

The kid wants to play ball. He would have a more than decent shot at starting. LMU (despite our consistently poor record) gets more than its share of NBA players and scouts. If CMD can sell him on his NBA credentials, we have a shot.

Seems like this kid might be enticed to play in front of his family here in LA. I think it comes down to LMU's location, family and playing opportunity versus the big gym and brand of the midwest and SEC.
Too bad there are no students because he could just walk around campus and see the eye candy (the weather of course) that he won't in Missouri.
This will be Dunlap's first big moment as a coach. It becomes the idea of what LMU could be, which is what he's selling in that article and to the fan base, versus the big stage and established nature of the beast which is the high major kids that only Gonzaga, BYU and St. Mary's receive. What I would tell Phillips is that those top WCC teams are full of guys that went high major but decided it wasn't best for their games and decided to play for those programs for the opportunity. What Dunlap is going to sell is that he knows BJennings he coached in the NBA and Big East but even he stepped away from the spotlight to build something at LMU.
What I would sell to the kid is he gets to spend the year in LA, summers at the Drew where he can be a defacto host like those other LA guys. His brother comes down anyhow, all the NBA guys show up, and if he's thinking pros either Europe or NBA D-League he's Jennings' little brother and so he already will get looked at. See = J.R. Smith's little bro who was terrible but played on the Knicks somehow.
I hope this works out. Lord knows we could use a good PG to lock down the position. I could seem him starting all four years. Simon would be best suited as a back-up PG and Hayes a scorer off the bench with the Aussies and Haney holding up the SF position.
Good luck to Coach Dunlap
