Gonzaga has depth galore and size, skill and capable guards. Playing anywhere else, Pangos would be averaging over 20 ppg but that level of scoring is not needed with the Zag’s balanced offense. The Lions will have a hard time controlling the Zags offense, especially with big man Wiltjer’s size and skills from outside and inside. Zag’s centers will be a handful for Godwin and Patson. And will our offense be able to keep in the game against this “monster” team from up north? This is the Lions final home game before a 4-game road trip up north during the next two weeks. Gametime: Saturday, Jan 17, 1 pm (per Lions site) or 6 pm (per Zags site), Gersten. My strategy to beat the Zags: (info in parentheses is from the Portland game)
Hold two of their top 3 scorers to 6 points (Van der Mars, Bailey) Outrebound them (39-33) Surprise them with scoring from unexpected sources (Flint 7, Hayes 9, Deji 22, Money 21) Shoot over 50% from the field, including 67% from 3-point range Foil their defensive plan by keeping Evan Payne on the bench for lots of minutes (what does the defense focus on in this case??)
Go Lions!

All the kibbutzing in the world won't overcome the fact that the Lions were up against the #3 team in the country. The 2 points to 20 points start really killed the competitiveness of the game. Those early TOs really hurt. I think the Lions only had 2 or 3 shots in their first 5 or 6 possessions.
It was great to see the guys not give up and do their best to battle back. Petr and Matt both showed that they have offensive potential. Deji has to step up his aggressiveness. When he does, the team's offense actually doesn't look too bad. We have to find ways of opening up some outside shooting.
On defense, Godwin did a very good job on the big guy. He only had one basket. We continue to get killed by outside sharpshooters. I know the Lions were concentrating on their inside game, but leaving guys like Pangos and Bell consistently open is not going to keep us in any games.
Working with Evan does pose a dilemma. He's an exciting player who can score in so many ways, but the team plays better without him. When he comes in the game, the excitement level definitely ratchets up several notches, but the rest of the team kinda sits there and waits for him to exercise his magic. Somehow, Dunlap needs to figure out how to blend Evan's talent with the rest of team so that they can be a productive, cohesive unit.
After the terrible start with TOs, the team ended up only committing 11 TOs. That was very good.
If they can keep the TOs down and find some ways of getting some more open shots, the next several games are winnable. Each of the upcoming teams have significant weaknesses.

A note on the Zags -
They have a lot of talent but they should be worried that playing the #9/10 team in the conference, they only had one bench player contribute any points. Given their depth of talent, that was very surprising.

I really appreciate the guys beating the spread. I should also probably thank Mark Few for at least a couple of his contributions including stopping their automatic back court pressure in the first 5 minutes or so (we were clearly not handling it) and also for clearing his bench toward the end of the game. For the Lions part, they played their hearts out. We matched Gonzaga's rebounding and pretty much kept a lid on close in scoring by their 2 monsters. Deji and Money were not close to Thursdays offensive output. Overall we didn't have more than a handful of threes vs the Zags god knows how many treys. Todays surprise bright spot was Herman, with at least 10 points and almost as many rebounds. (just when we had all but written him off). I absolutely enjoyed our overall aggressive play despite some unproductive moments in the 2nd half when we reverted to running the shot clock down by dribbling and passing among ourselves 35-40 ft. from the basket. For the remainder of the season we should be competitive within the WCC lower division teams and in so doing garner at least another few wins.
I also took notice of the homecoming half time ceremony: About 10 men and women students dressed in jeans, sweatshirts and similar attire sauntered on to mid-court. Then a voice reminiscent of Alvin the Chipmunk appeared to read the names and sponsorship of the students who it turns out were candidates for king and queen. The King was crowned with what looked like it might have been a cheese wrapper and the queen awarded what looked to be a paper mache tiara that kept falling off. That was it, the processes took only a couple of minutes, mercifully short actually. Times change.

i sort of agree with ALioninWinter about Evan i dont think they just sit there and wait for him to do his majic he gets a pass and then hes off trying to dribble through 2 or 3 players when he cant find a way through it all unravels and its a forced pass to some one and it all starts again, just about every game we have played the three point shots have killed us,its like we are waiting for them to have a bad shooting game for us to win.i thought they never gave up all the way through go you Lions

Aussie - I was being a bit cryptic in my description for the sake of brevity. As a result my comment came across a little too strong. I know the guys aren't "just standing there." They continue to make their cuts, but they all know Evan has significantly more ability to make something happen so there's a strong tendency to defer to him. It's a tough issue to work. You don't want to tell Evan to dial down his performance level. It was interesting to watch Petr on two separate occasions hesitate before taking wide open outside shots. I don't remember if Evan was even in the game at those times but it's indicative of what I'm talking about. The rest of the team can't simply dial UP their skill level but they should be encouraged to play with confidence.
