I thought we played well today after our sluggish start and given that Patson is out and Gonzaga is so good. I attribute this to being a bit intimidated at the start but when we realized that the Zags put their pants on one leg at a time, we settled down and were competitive.
I give my game kudos to Petr Herman, who had a breakout game today. When he had his first open 3-point shot, you could almost hear the brain synapses flashing as he debated “to be or not to be” but when is swished the net, something clicked. He played a physical game under the boards and during loose ball scrums also – very good! Petr was our leading 3-pt shooter % wise hitting 3 of 6 before the game tonite.
Matt continues to gain confidence in his shot – he has a quick release. Re ball handling, I think Matt fits the 2 position better than the PG so far. I like his aggressiveness on offense.
David is a handful – I like how he can drive the basket and also shoot the 3! Today was not his best from 3 but he is a real presence under the boards. Keep up the good work.
Deji had a bit of an off game – it seems his game comes to life late in the game timeline. If he can get things going earlier, it would help. He is another who can drive the lane and make things happen. Now we just need that big who can handle a lob dunk inside and we are golden.
Godwin’s game is defense and he played fine. Limited offense as we all know by now.
Chase continues to handle the ball well.
Evan is struggling a bit to find his role. He brings a real spark to the arena when he’s on the floor. I did not see exactly what happened but he appeared to injure his hip in the 2nd half and did not have full mobility afterwards. No foul was called – did he just slip on the floor? In any case, he was noticeably limping afterwards and seemed to leave the floor early after the game.
Dunlap wants to win and I’m OK with his (or the team’s) technical foul – speaking up for your players is good even if it costs points. These were not critical today in any case except for the spread. Player use is fine by me.
Still don’t understand what’s happening with Simon? I’m guessing an injury? If not, he will have one from splinters on the bench.
Wyatt is getting good minutes and drained his 2 FTs non-chalantly today. He has a flat shot but they went in fine. He is getting comfortable on the floor. With another season of strength training, he can become a force inside with his 6’7” size.
Mornar struggled a bit today, perhaps Few has his number.
On to Santa Clara, one of those game we can win, who beat USF soundly today 70-64.
