The Broncos are led by their two sterling guards who scored Clark 23 and Brownridge 18 vs USF today. Hubbard, a freshman, at 6’9” 230, seems to be their leading inside player although he had only 2 points vs the Dons.
We should match up well size wise inside vs the Broncos but the key will be stopping their guards. Brownridge and Clark shot a combined 50% (6 of 12) today from 3-point range.
If Herman continues his aggressive play and Matt and David continue to show up, our core group can handle the Broncos. But this is the WCC and who knows.
I expect the Lions to be a slight favorite.
Gametime: Thursday, Jan 22, 8 pm, on the road. Video: TWC SN (LA), CSN CA (Comcast Sports Network?) TheW.tv ("out of area")

The Bronco guards really drilled the Dons. In addition to Clark and Brownridge, Johnson showed s nice outside shot. It doesn't seem like a 2-3 zone is the best way to play these guys because it leaves a lot of open perimeter spots. The Bronco's inside game should not be a threat.

The SCU game starts a very interesting and important slate of games for the Lions. Believe it or not, SCU is in 5th place with 3 WCC wins. The teams occupying places 6-9 all have only 2 WCC wins. LMU, as we know, has 1 WCC win. Thus, the race to finish in the top 6 (and avoid the 7-10 WCC Tourney round) is fully available to LMU with both the 5th & 6th spots up for grabs. It will be very interesting to see how the Lions fare in this competition.

About the 2-3 zone. Not my choice either but must admit the Lions have been improving it's employment. We are still not Syracuse but sticking with it has made our defense more consistent.

I think the next two games are winnable but we are on the road. SCU lost by 17 to Portland and by 35 to BYU. Their 3 wins are over Pacific, USD and now USF. LMU team play has been improving each game and the players should be less intimidated vs the Broncos compared to the Zags so lets hope we have a faster start with some stops early. Starting in a big hole hasn't worked well for the Lions. USF seem very beatable from their record. Maybe looking at 3 WCC wins for the Lions by next Sunday?

The SCU game is very winnable. The Broncos have good guard shooting but that's it. If we don't win this one, I think it's a problem.
USF is a different story. Frankly, if we win I anticipate it will be largely a case of the Dons beating themselves ( which could happen--see my Dons post) more than the Lions beating them.

Comments from the SCU Board after their USF game:“A win is a win. At least we got to the FT line more than normal and this helped us win. Need to be able to keep pouring iot [sic] on when we get a lead. Now hopefully we can beat LMU and Pepperdine at home next week. Waves are struggling against Portland who lost to LMU. Hoping to go at least 8-10 and maybe 9-9.” “Streamed this on my phone via the Scu athletics app, didn't know this was a thing! Pleasantly surprised to see us open an 18 point lead in the second half. Usf changed to full court pressure and we really got thrown off - even got a lazy ten second call. From that point I was dreading the worst but we held on. Really glad to beat usf. Must beat lmu, and a weird matchup against PEPP who seems to be all over the place in terms of their competitivenes.” scufanscom.yuku.com/topic/3302/USFSCU#.VL8TTycyAos Bronco fans are realistic but optimistic like Lions’ fans.

Broncos are 6.5 point favorites - home court advantage? Also USF favored by 2 over the Waves, Portland by 11 over Pacific and Zags by 15 over SMC
Makes for some interesting picks on WCC Pick'em - some say "juicy"
Is Vegas having an off night?
