Gonzaga Bulldogs – Part II
The Zags are now 24-1 and breezing through their WCC schedule. They beat leading competitors SMC by 21 at home and BYU by 7 on the road.
Jan 31, they took a bye from their WCC schedule to tackle a tough Memphis squad in Spokane, who they whipped by 18 points (82-64).
We lost to the Bulldogs 72-55 in Gersten in mid-January but we’re playing better now (aren’t we?). Besides this has been a crazy WCC season. Witness: in one week, the Waves beat BYU then lose badly to USD, who lost to the Lions who were whipped by BYU. Did you follow that? No logic there!
In their latest game at San Francisco, the score was a virtual tie at halftime and the Zags two big men were courting foul problems (Karnowski and Sabonis). No problem, bring in #3 center Angel Nunez, 6’8” Junior Forward who transferred from Louisville and who admirably filled the “void.” The Zags went on to win 81-70 but did not beat the spread (12).
Will the Lions bounce back from our discouraging loss to the Cougars, or is SLB right that we’ve just been lucky to win several recent games?
I think we’ll be competitive but expect the spread to be large – like 18 or so.
Gametime: Thursday, February 12, 6 PM in the “Dog Kennel.” Video: Root (?) plus TBD. Out of area: TheW.tv

Lions are 23.5 point underdogs. I had to bet on LMU beating the spread in Pick'em. If I lose, I'm toast for this season.
The Zags have had a hard time beating big spreads and this one surprised me being over 20 points.
Go Lions!

It's true, Gonzaga has not covered several larger spreads. They can certainly lose focus as evidenced last Saturday in San Fran. However, I would sit this one out if I were a betting man. At Gertson, I felt we beat the spread, barely, for 2 reasons. (1) Mark Few is not an as*h***; the first 4 minutes of the game they employed full court pressure and jumped off to something like a 18 or 20 to 2 lead. Then they called it off and sort of coasted around 18-20 points up the rest of the game except for (2) the last 5-6 minutes when they pulled basically their top 7 - 8 players. Still we could certainly get hot and all but this one is in the Kennel and they will be anxious to cleanse their pallets from the taste of Saturdays near upset. They are heading toward another number 1 seed in the big dance, their second in 3 seasons. Two years age the national sports media questioned their ranking and their number one NCAA seed (then Gonzaga proved them right by losing in the second round). So I think they might be in a pour it on mode tonight.
A relatively close loss tonight would actually be impressive, hell I might even take a sip of Kool-aid. Now a full fledged upset and I chug a gallon of the stuff.

Zags up 20-0 - I'm getting nervous about beating the 23.5 spread?

Lots of talk from the announcers about whether the Zags really belongs in the WCC. Like do games like this prepare them for the NCAA tournament. They have a point and Dunlap is having an eye opener tonight.

I simply couldn't watch past the first 10 minutes. Coach Dunlap has a long, long road ahead of him.
The announcers have a point. The "other" schools in the conference each need to figure out a path forward that will result in some better quality teams. Randy Bennett has done a creditable job at St. Mary's. BYU has tremendous resources so I think they will be okay in the future (this year is a rare off-season for them). Nobody else has really been able to step up and build any consistency into their program. I do not understand why not.

I missed the first 13 minutes of the game, but noticed that Payne was on the bench then, and didn't start the second half. Anyone know why he's not seeing the court?

Actually. as the official 6th man Evan usually does not start the second half. However, some on this forum believe the team plays better without him; another theory is that Coach Duncan doesn't especially like stars and would rather have "team players" presumably even more mediocre ones. Last night nothing would have made much difference.

Husky - very forgivable. You were probably thinking of Duncan, King of Scotland, in "The Tragedy of Macbeth," who was slain to promote Macbeth to the throne and Lady Macbeth's plea afterwards "Out, damned spot! Out, I say!" (Act V. Scene 1) trying to cleanse the evidence of her foul deed. You want to cleanse this loss to the Zags from your memory no? I guess Freud fits in here somewhere.
