www.wccsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030315aab.htmlIts my understanding each coach nominates their players and the other coaches vote on them. The fact that Evan is not on any list makes me question if Dunlap nominated him. There is no reason he shouldn't be on the first team, he was second or third leading scorer in the league all season.

Afraid you are probably right in your suspicions. No way Evan isn't one of WCC's 15 best players. Pretty sure he would have Pacific's vote (50 points in our 2 games with them) and Portland's (14 points in 56 seconds). Unless Evan really, really loves LMU's truly beautiful campus enough to stick around while his deconstruction is completed, I don't see him back next year. The bright side of that might be Coach Dunlap then might make a couple of call's to his many, many contacts and get the Charlotte Bobcats to give the newly minted "team player" a try out for their summer pro league entry.

As a paying, contributing Lion fan of long standing, I have earned the right to be "childish" now and then.

I think if I were an opposing coach, Payne is one of the players I would least likely want to see on the floor against my team. Truly, I don't understand his lack of recognition. I would like to see him back next season for the Lions but I'm not sure its in the cards from where we are right now.

Says a lot about Dunlap's character.
Good luck to Evan on his decision.

There is no reason he shouldn't be on the first team, he was second or third leading scorer in the league all season. Who would you remove from the first team to put Evan on it? And why is he more deserving?
Does being the 3rd best scorer in the league automatically qualify you for being on the first team? Do the top four make it? Top five? Do you have to be in the top five in field goal percentage? Because he's not even in the top 15 in field goal percentage. So he's more of a volume shooter I guess.
What about rebounders? Godwin leads the league in offensive rebounds. Why do you not complain about him? Do the top three or four leading players in assists make it? Chase is second in assists to turnover ratio. How about him? What about blocked shots? Marin is second in blocked shots in the league. Should he be first team?
Collinsworth is only 11th in the league in scoring and yet he does everything. He set the NCAA record for most triple-doubles in a career this year. I'd say that's way better than being a volume shooter.
Look I like Evan a lot and really enjoy watching him play. But there's a lot more to being a first team basketball player than just scoring. Also being on a successful team helps a lot. Gonzaga swept coach, player, newcomer and defensive player of the year honors. I am sure being 17-1 in league draws some attention to your players.
I look forward to you making your case for Evan being on the first team because I like him a lot.

Basketball games ultimately come down to who scores the most points wins. And Evan Payne scores lots of them. Evan deserves to be the list just as much as Brownridge and Carter. Even if for some odd reason he wasn't on the first team, he would definitely be on the second team. The point is Dunlap left him off the ballot which is a huge jerk move. Its axiomatic to anyone who knows anything about basketball that Evan should be on the all conference team.

Right on Ironlion. If he wasn't nominated they couldn't vote for him so "making a case for Evan" is moot.

And having made your case, you've let go from him being on the first team to the second team?
You disparage Dunlap without any proof because somehow you know he didn't offer him up for all league honors. And some others on this board accept it as true.
And if you're wrong and he did nominate Evan, you think you know more about all the players in the league than the coaches who voted for the all league teams. That they don't know basketball like you do. And everyone - including me - who may disagree with you, doesn't know basketball.
Sorry I was expecting an intelligent, thoughtful answer. But I got mostly anger.
Go Lions!

It would be nice to know for sure; but I doubt that is in the cards. It is however, a resonable assumption given the coaches readily apparent demonstrated antipathy toward Evan.

Well Evan does not even appear on "Honorable Mention"...
Christopher Anderson, San Diego; Kevin Bailey, Portland; Aaron Bright, Saint Mary's; Brandon Clark, Santa Clara; Jett Raines, Pepperdine; Thomas van der Mars, Portland; T.J. Wallace, Pacific; Anson Winder, BYU
You're right. The First Team has some good players that have all contributed to winning and some overall games. You also factor in that Evan has been missing a few games and maybe he did not qualify. But there are guys like Viney, Dubois, Hamilton, Ireland, etc that have all appeared somewhere on a conference team at season's end and LMU has generally been finishing near the bottom.
Lets be honest. If Evan says hes transferring Dunlap probably said "You dont deserve to be nominated" or maybe he said "Evan you think youre so good you dont need to be nominated...etc". Look you want to know why Evan would get voted something? Because when he's in the game he gets double and triple teamed by the other team..that's why.
Mr. SpiritofLoyola...I encourage you to watch a replay of the Gonzaga vs LMU game here at Gersten when the defense was all over Evan the whole game. I doubt that type of defense is used against scrubs.

I have been a season ticket holder for over twenty-five years. I have seen hundreds of players come and go from this basketball program. Very rarely have I seen a player more entertaining and with the natural athletic ability than Evan Payne. LMU was extremely blessed to have a player of Evans' caliber come to our school. If LMU had no other players (which this year was close to true), Evan, by himself, is worth the price of admission alone. That being said, I am concerned, to say the least, on the future of Evan. I am hoping that Evans' lack of playing time this year was due to an injury, and not because of an egotistical coach whose "team player" concept stubbornly got in the way. We did not have a "team" this year, we had Evan. In order for a D-1 team to be successful you have to have D-1 players. This year we had Evan. I never understood why Evan didn't start this year, but I was giving coach the benefit of the doubt. To Evans credit I never once saw him com plain, pout, or act like it bothered him. He just went out and gave it his all, and we were fortunate enough to see some really spectacular plays. His 14 points in the last 2 minutes almost single handily willed us to victory. By him not even making Honorable Mention in the WCC League this year is a joke! All credibility is lost on the coaches who voted, IF Evan was nominated. If Evan was not nominated, Shame on coach Dunlap!! I will tell you right now, after 25 years of being a season ticket holder, I will NOT renew my tickets if Evan leaves. He is a special player, Hard to find, that comes around only so often. Dunlap is a coach that has not shown an ability to recruit, plays a boring, slow down style of basketball, stubbornly stays in a zone defense till the opposition hits sooo many 3 pointers the game is over, and arrogantly sits the best player on the team. A coach like this is Easily replaced...
