Evan just posted on instagram that he is leaving LMU. Shame. Shame. Shame. Not much more to say.

Should have added that I wish Evan all the best in his next chapter. We will miss him.

Such a shame. Huge loss for the Lions. I wonder where they will get their scoring next year.

Well great. Coach Dunlap has rid himself of a major distraction, not to mention a whole bunch of points.

Payne Stewart Cartwright Levin, that's a lot of talent that Dunlap has chased or scared away.. This without any replacements.
So far our accomplishment thi year has been to finish last and lose our best player who I think is headed Big 10 or Big 12. Big flop this far.

If anyone knows of ANY distraction Evan caused, I would love to hear it. Is being a very good player a major distraction? Is being a Max Good recruit a distraction? I just don;t get it. Mike Dunlaps recruits failed to score a point in our tournament appearance against Santa Clara. Without Deji and Evan, who both will not be back next year, our team scored 9 points against Santa Clara. Good Luck

I asked a coach on Evan's recruiting visit about how he is and was told, "He could be better than Anthony when its all said and done". This is a very bad day for LMU basketball but I'm not surprised with Evan's departure. I wish him the very best.

My "distraction " comment was a snide reference to my perception of Coach Dunlap's attitude regarding Evan. Evan as the leading Freshman scorer in LMU history did not fit the "Good riddance to Good, everything is wrong, and (the great) Mike Dunlap is going to fix it all" narrative. Evan may have been unable able to swallow the "great teacher" was going make him a measurably better player pronouncements.
I understood that a factor in him coming to LMU was that he had family in the LA area. So wouldn't be surprised to see him transfer to Long Beach State or USC.

Certainly can't fault his decision. It's what I would've done if it were me. It's what I would have advised him to do if he had asked me.
There was a moment in the Santa Clara game that told me it was a done deal. It occurred fairly late in the game. Evan was in the midst of a minor scoring flurry. He had completed a couple of successful drives to the basket. He knew no Bronco could stop him, and that their inside game was weak enough that if he did miss he had a good chance at the rebound. That's exactly what happened and he scored two baskets. So next time down the court, what happens? Yep. The guard sags off and leaves Evan wide open for a 3. Which he made.
CMD immediately called a timeout and started talking to Evan. I told myself coach is now chewing on Evan for not passing ... Despite having just scored 6 straight points. Evan, who is always deferential, professional and polite, just walked away. That spoke volumes about what Evan was thinking.
Evan was wide open for that shot. It would have been flat out wrong to not take that shot. Why shouldn't he drive the lane when he knew no Bronco could contain him. Especially when there was not a single other player showing any ability to score.
I'm all about team ball but you have to have a team to play team ball. It's not Evan's fault no one on the team can keep up with him. You don't hold back your one quality player just because no one else can play at that level. He was passing the ball a lot in the Santa Clara game. It's not his fault no one else could do anything.
NBA calibre talent don't grow on trees, especially for a middling mid-major program. CMD was given a huge gift when he inherited the Lions. It's a shame he didn't recognize the gift.

This is a sad day for LMU basketball - what a loss. The worst part is what it portends for LMU basketball's future. Does anyone think Husak will take Dunlap to the wood shed for a good talking, or is that idea simply folly? From here, I see a difficult future but I hope I'm wrong. Supporters will say "give Dunlap a chance" and I do hope they are right.

Speaking of Kupchak, I was watching him during the Gonzaga game at Gersten this year, and he was clearly scouting three players: Sabonis, Pangos...and Evan.
If someone taught Evan good defense and he continued to work on an outside shot, he's definitely a fringe NBA player...which LMU hasn't had since I've been a fan (2004). Going off Dunlap's twitter feed I assumed that was what his expertise was in, but apparently Evan's AAU background must have made him unteachable.
As far as Husak...what is going to tell Dunlap? If anyone needs to be let go, its that guy who is too lazy to do a real coach search. Bove herself stated in the Grantland article she has no idea what she's doing and I imagine that should extend to Husak.
Unless Dunlap pulls a rabbit out of his hat, or a Kimble-Gathers transfer situation-redux happens, the future of LMU basketball looks dim. Without the presence of top talent or a big recruit to carry the program (Tutu being a good complimentary prospect) I can't see the Lions being any good for at least 4 years or Dunlap's 5th and perhaps final. That would make Dunlap 61. Seems like another half decade of more of the same.
As a side note, with the pressure surrounding Gonzaga to leave the conference for more competition, and the potential that it would cause BYU also to bolt, one could imagine that our dreams of LMU somehow reclaiming some kind of regional status looking worse and worse. Sadly, perhaps our hope is that arch rival Pepperdine comes back and can rise to give Gonzaga, BYU and St. Mary's another brand option to keep the league competitive. I know that many of us hope that the WCC could basically become like the A-10 with LMU becoming one of the pillars.
Honestly, forget Husak. The problem is that right now LMU has no leadership in basketball because nobody keeps Husak accountable. This is a thing where University admins get involved. And right now, we have no University President. David Burcham talked big when he said that his goal was to make LMU into Georgetown and as silly as it sounds, basketball is a driving force. Having a competitive basketball team rises the number of applicants and therefore makes competition stronger and the student body better. Since when was Gonzaga or St. Mary's a good academic school on par with the Loyola tradition? Probably since their b-ball teams started to rise. Imagine LMU with a good bball team? No doubt the equal to schools like UCSB, UCSD or UCI(minus the PHD programs/research portion). Unfortunately Burcham quit and Husak reached out to a desperate coach who had been just fired.
People claiming Dunlap's great resume need to point to me where he had his greatest success. I'm having trouble figuring it out. Division II national titles? Wasn't that Max Good? Getting run out of town in Adelaide? Going from coach to coach as an assistant that does not stay in one place very long? What about St. John's? When was the last time that program was in the NCAAs? Lavin is in the hotseat there. George Karl got fired from Denver (and ironically is trying to dump DeMarcus Cousins because he won't fit HIS system..hmm) Arizona assistant= Rondey Tention had Lute Olsen. Oregon assistant...Ernie Kent?? Yep...

Can't say whether or not Dunlap is your answer, but after being witness to arguably our own worst decade in history, and how much turnover we've endured on our end of PCH before/after coaching changes, I'll lend my condolences.
Call it: "the people, and the process"... In not being national powers, you just have to hope you've picked the right people to be at the helm who you can roll through the punches with, and who can reciprocate that endurance until enough impact players see the worth and come through over time to help bring stability back, little by little. Definitely anxiety-ridden and definitely painful.
SoCal WCC needs to get on an up-swing again. Too soft of a post form a rival, right? I hate lmu! There... some normalcy!
