I am not surprised by this. He was there long enough to make an impact and he never did. Outside of Johnny Dee and Anderson, he did not recruit any great talents. They played better than there talent allowed, but not enough wins.

Guess the USD Athletic Department finally sobered up and realized they had unloaded a winning coach for a losing one. May have cost them though, I understand they gave Grier an extension and a pay raise last year. Seriously though, if Max could have hung on just through this year we would have had a crack at him.
BTW, I don't think he recruited Dee; I believe was a walk on.

Johnny Dee was a walk on, but I believe Grier encouraged him to walk on. I

If we could dump Dunlap, we might land Grier - are you on board Husky?

That would be a tough decision. But no, don't think so at this point. If we could get them to trade personalities, that would be worth another look. Now if we dumped Dunlap to pick up Brad Holland the answer would be different.

Brad Holland works for the Boys & Girls Club in San Diego. I would call that guy.

I had heard a few days ago that Eric Musselman was the front-runner for the USD job, but it was just reported that he was hired by Nevada.
If they had hired Musselman, USD would have stolen a page from Husak's play book: hire a point guard from the alma mater who also had been an NBA head coach (Musselman played at USD in the 1980s and had been head coach of the Warriors and Kings).
Wonder if they will now go after Miami Heat associate head coach (and 1990s USD point guard) David Fizdale?

At least we aren't the only ones struging with the firing and hiring of coaches. ASU just fired their coach. We'd probably be ecstatic with a coach who had gotten us to the NCAAs several times, won some tournament games and at least made the NIT in the off years.
What's really interesting is that 3 months ago he was given a 3 month extension! Go figure.

Mark Few, Bill Grier and Dan Monson share(d) a Sugar Daddy. Although not mentioned in the article Dunlap’s salary, while an assistant at Oregon, was also Sugarized by one time OU Athletic Director and Phil Knight crony, Pat Kilkenny. www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/mar/25/usd-basketball-eric-musselman-nevada/From the last two paragraphs of the San Diego Union Tribune article: “Grier won a game in the NCAA Tournament in his first season and re-negotiated his contract after being courted by Oregon State. His salary increased from $471,133 to $643,904 by 2012-13, the last year federal tax documents outlining his compensation are available. His salary reportedly was subsidized by Pat Kilkenny, the former Oregon athletic director who is close friends with Grier. Kilkenny, who owns a home in the San Diego area, told The Oregonian newspaper a few years ago that he helped pay the salaries of Grier and two other disciplines of former Oregon coach Don Monson: his son, Dan, at Long Beach State and Mark Few at Gonzaga.”
