Pumpfake - thanks for the reference - so we are not alone in the basketball universe?
One thing I took from the article was finding the right "league" for your team to compete in - if you reach too high, you are doomed to perennial failure season after season.
To me this brings up the topic of Gonzaga and the possibility that they might move to a "higher" conference in keeping with the overall realignment of sports leagues that has been underway. I would add to that basket BYU - which has a special place for Mormon athletes usually catching the best of them in their recruiting net.
What I could see is a WCC with 8 more-equal teams competing for a spot in the dance if Gonzaga and BYU moved on. To my mind, that's not a terrible scenario for LMU to think about.
I know getting that big upset win over the Zags or Cougars lifts one's spirits but they come infrequently.
Are there others who think along these lines?

I know all the attention and all the money flows to football and basketball, but I feel a school should consider ALL of its athletes, even the ones in the non-spotlight sports, when making a conference decision. In the sports in which the WCC competes (which is the majority of the secondary sports) the conference competes at the highest levels -- easily on par with the BCS conferences. In several key sports it's typically better. I think Gonzaga and BYU should include the "other sports" in their decision process. Travel also becomes a consideration. BYU going to the Big 12 may not present too many travel issues but where does Gonzaga go to go "up"? There's been talk of them going to the Big East but should they be sending their sports teams to the East Coast all the time? Baseball teams play 50+ games a year. That's a lot of travel.
I know, money speaks volumes. But Gonzaga seems to be doing pretty well in their current circumstances. All of the talk regarding the BCS leagues making their own rules is also going to impact everything. I really don't like where college sports is ... and where it's going. But it's nearly impossible to stop that movement.

Gonzaga to the Pac 12 - for all the complications that entail - would address the travel issue.
I'm not sure about issues with other sports but I know Gonzaga is competitive in soccer and men's baseball.

Then again the Zags might enjoy their trips to the dance.

BYU is the logical odd man out; size and budget are obvious reasons. Gonzaga with it's much smaller venues would struggle keeping up with the Pac 12 schools which all have Division I Football programs to anchor their budgets. No, Gonzaga would fit better into the Big East or the Missouri Valley Conference.
BTW I always felt Seattle might rejoin the WCC; they are a midget among giants in the WAC.
