Loyola Marymount head coach Mike Dunlap and his staff received some good news Saturday afternoon, as one of the top players in Los Angeles has decided to remain home and play for the Lions in college. 6-foot-3 shooting guard Donald Gipson, a senior at Fairfax High School, announced that he will attend Loyola Marymount via his Twitter account. Gipson was an All-City selection as a junior, a season which came to an end prematurely due to a partially torn knee ligament suffered in a playoff game. Gipson is expected to be ready to go for the start of his senior season. collegebasketball.nbcsports.com/2015/09/19/three-star-shooting-guard-donald-gipson-headed-to-lmu/

I view this as good news on multiple levels. First, this young man appears to be a recognized distinguished local basketball player. Second, and as if not more important it seems to me, this is evidence that Coach Dunlap and his staff are having recruiting success at all relevant levels with more than one recruit internationally, nationally (Haney, Tutu, Tuach), locally (McClendon & Gipson) and from junior college, prep school and high school.
When Dunlap was named as coach one of the questions was whether he could recruit "today's players" with the prevalence of the AAU system. While we all anxiously await seeing this year's crop, it appears that Dunlap and staff have successfully answered the first part of this question. The question now focuses on the quality of the selections.

Scout on the road 7/1/2014 Joel Francisco LOS ANGELES -- The past few weeks while elite camps have been dominating the recruiting landscape, there have been a plethora of high school tournaments littered along the Los Angeles landscape. Here are some players who stood out during that time: Most Improved Donald Gipson 2016, WF, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds Gipson has extended his production from the paint area to the perimeter. The chiseled wing-type is still snatching rebounds and finishing through contact, but now he's draining 3-point shots and creating plays off the dribble. insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncbrecruiting/on-the-trail/insider/post?id=10806

This could be a steal for the Lions. Coming off an injury like that probably scared a lot of schools off. Great risk for Dunlap to take. Hope to see him succeed and do well his senior season.
