On paper, this team looks pretty strong: they have a group of bigs that can score inside and 3 players in double figures with 2 more in the 9+ range. This game should be another good challenge for the Lions. I’m hoping to see continued good progress from the players and some smarter play from Jacko so he actually can put in some decent minutes. If I were Theus, I’d have the bigs challenging Jacko from the opening bell on Wednesday.
Gametime: Wednesday, Nov 25, 6 pm at Gersten. TV: TheW.tv (however go to the Lions website and use the video link there – it’s quality seems higher)
Go Lions!

This is a game with a win would show that we are making progress towards being in the top half of college basketball. Jason Richardson, their leading scorer, is also a walk-on. LMU was in a pretty good list of schools that almost offered but didn't quite pull the trigger. Not to often a freshman walk-on leads a team in scoring, even if it has only been 4 games.

I watched the first half of he Matadors' game vs USC USC jumped on them quickly moving the ball well and had 11 assists with their first 11 baskets. The announcers noted that CSUN were not rotating well on defense, hence the easy baskets. CSUN did not shoot well early and that hurt them.
CSUN has a short rotation - I believe they only use 7 players; there are lots of transfers on their roster who are redshirting.
CSUN's big man at 6'11" 245 may give our guys problems, especially Jacko with his tendency to foul.
If the Lions run well and use a deep rotation, we should be able to tire these guys out over the course of the game.
I like the Lions' chances but we have to shoot well and watch our fouling.
Go Lions!

I also caught some of the Northridge/USC game. It was ugly, sort of reminded me of our UCI venture. I thought USC played extremely solid defense, they were very quick; and that may be the key for us.
I hope some of our guys did in fact gain some pride and confidence by whipping up on Antelope Valley. Herman was animated and seemed comfortable playing against that level of confirmation. Our leading scorer "erupted" for 8 of his 14 points during the last 2 minutes. During his previous 18 minutes on court he registered a more modest (and typical) 2 for 9 from the field including 0-5 from behind the 3 point line. I suspect the coach instructed Brown to back off and let the other kids play; he will need to give Brown the green light tonight.
Looks like this one is winnable, not sure about the 6 points. GO Lions!

With Jacko having an off night, it is sure nice to see Johnson playing so well.

That was all about spiers, what a game. Brown played well, Johnson had a really good first half. Disappointed that tutu is out of the rotation, also looks like jacko learned his lesson on fouling which is good. Need to clean up the defensive rebounds but signs of improvement are there. Spiers won us that game with his shooting, he just needs to become better at D and rebounding so even when his shot isn't falling he can still contribute. Game was closer than I would have liked to see but a win is a win, go lions!

Yes, this team just needs wins to build confidence.
It would be nice if we could get Brown a few extra minutes of rest in the first half or first portion of second half, but when he goes out of the game we really did fall apart tonight. I don't think we scored when he was on the bench. Brown missed a couple of shots, including two free throws, late in regulation and overtime. He is by far our best player and we need him out there but he did look fatigued at the end. I do not blame Dunlap, he tried to give Brown a rest each half, but he is well ahead of Tutu and Hayes when it comes to running the offense.
Fantastic shooting by Spiers. When is the last time we had a player make 6 3-pointers in a game?
I would've liked a nice 10 or 15-point victory as well, but we have to remember that the majority of minutes are going to guys who are in their first year of Division I basketball. This will take time, and as long as we keep winning it should help our confidence come WCC play.

A good win tonight - a bit too exciting for my tastes but we came out on top CSUN was deadly with their free throws in regulation - 25 for 25; that kept them in the game. And the got lucky converting two critical 3-point shots at the end of regulation.
2015 is correct - this was Joshua Spiers night - he was a major factor in the win. Jacko seems to have learned to control his fouling - this was a good test as CSUN had several bigs to challenge him inside.
I liked Humphries contributions also. I think Dunlap does not give him enough credit, i.e., minutes, for his play.
Haney continues to disappoint but he did convert an important 3 to end the first half and another important 3 in the late going. In between, he is shooting like Kobe Bryant.
Johnson was a force and made some nice buckets. Jacko got his points and more importantly minutes.
Brown is so quick - I'd hate to have to guard him - and scored enough.
Tauch did not make much of his time on the floor tonight - perhaps I wasn't watching him closely on D.
An all around team win tonight and a confidence builder - one block at a time.

I agree about humpheries, he played 19 minutes while Haney played 33... One could definitely argue that based on how they've played in game humpheries should've had 33 and Haney 19. I also didn't like that Herman played 3 minutes, I really want to see him and tutu both get at least 8-10 minutes per night, and if by league they don't look good then let them sit. Also kind of seems like mornars role has been reduced to being a stretch 4 off the bench (only played 11 minutes). Also tuach only played 10, had no impact on offense. He was a 40% three point shooter in juco, but he hasn't shown signs of a good shot yet. Hopefully between him and Haney, one of them finds their outside shot.

At this point it looks like the players are sorting themselves out with their play.
Brown Hayes and Tutu are all small guards but Brown gives scoring and Hayes leadership. I'm fine with a true frosh sitting if he needs the work in practice. I know I stated that it would be ludicrous to bench a top recruit but Brown is solid and Tutu needs the tuning for now, maybe until midway.
Spiers and Haney duplicate and Haney is not a good shooter at least in games. Since neither offer much on D, Tuach through length and McClendon through tenacity need to play. I agree if rather see Humohries than Haney.
In the paint Johnson seems like a smart player who knows what he is. Jacko also. Mornar could use some more minutes. Herman doesn't like to play in the post.
PG Brown SG Tuach SF Spiers PF Jacko C Johnson
Hayes McClendon Humphries Mornar is a good bench
