State has a number of tall dudes and a “name” player in Gary Payton II. This will be a tough game. If we play like we did in Missouri, we’ll get blown out of the gym! We’ll need our best game, which we actually have, and need to keep Jacko in the game.
Gametime: Wednesday, December 2 7 pm in Oregon. TV: Pac-12 Network

Lions are 15 point underdogs tonite - could be a character building experience but I have a feeling we can beat the spread. State had two marquee players in Payton II and Stephen Thompson, a highly recruited Freshman. Go Lions!

The 15 point spread seems fair; I may go for it. The Beavers strength is not impressive. Valpo has a strong team almost every year but clearly is a "mid-major" so that loss may be telling.Their guards do most of the scoring while their bigs look mostly young (but big for sure). Sooner or later we need a "signature win"; such the one a few years back when we went into South Bend and upset the Irish. How sweet it would be!
As an aside. Oregon State's new coach is Wayne Tinkle, we have seen him at least a couple of times when he was head coach at Montana (3 NCAA appearances). An X- Player and a real giant; which explains his survival in middle-school with a name like that.

Husky master of interesting coaching info - thanks I hope you are right about their bigs as they really outsize the Lions. BYU - Utah is also on Pac - 12 TV in parallel with the Lions

I really like the way we are competing, need to do a better job on the boards and brown needs to be a little more assertive on offense for us to win.

Entertaining first half of basketball Jacko playing a very good game so far - I don't think he has any fouls yet Beavers know they are in a contest tonite Keep it going Lions!

Lions playing with great energy. Really moving the ball and playing D. I hope Munis is OK. That type of play can result in a broken wrist. He went right to the locker room...... Fingers crossed that I am barking up the wrong tree here.

Yes - he seemed to land on his hands By the way, BYU getting their butts kicked at Utah, down 23 at the half 51-28 I think BYU is vulnerable this season

Great game, didn't make shots but we showed we can compete with anyone. Showing signs of improvement every game which is awesome. Looks like CMD prefers going small with humpheries or Haney at PF rather than having petr or mornar in the game. Tutu also played well before getting hurt, hopefully he is okay. Hopefully Dunlap is working hard on recruiting some bigs though, I think every game we play will be competitive except the zags due to their size, that could be ugly.

I got 14 points.. Cha Ching!
Great game from Haney; maybe he wasn't all hype afterall. Jacko - another stellar job. Good coaching - I liked our zone (in this case) and the screens he called during timeouts. Good game coverage from the PAC-12 network.
A couple of questions: why didn't Mornar play (?) and why did Herman play?

What makes it more interesting is the fact that they had a stretch 5, which you think would be a good match up for him. He isn't the really tough, defensive minded type player Dunlap loves, but he has performed fairly well when on the court, maybe something is going to off the court or during practice?
Also, last night showed that Jacko and Brown (and maybe Haney if he keeps playing better) are the guys that can carry us against our better opponents. And even though Spiers didn't really shoot well, I thought last night was his best game on defense and rebounding. McClendon also showed signs of being someone who can contribute on offense, but still looks like he would rather play inside 10 feet than on the perimeter. He is going to need a jump shot/respectable 3 point shot before he can be someone who plays 25+ minutes a night.
Also, 0-2 from the free throw line for the game, both of them front ends of 1 and 1's. Even though we could have easily shot 10+ (Refs were letting them play), now our losses to Colorado State and this one were arguably decided by their huge free throw advantage. Next sign of improvement will definitely be this (being more aggressive in driving to the rim on offense, limiting fouls in half court defense).
Overall great game, if we play like this vs UCR we should be fine.

I thought our defense did a great job defending the drive. If their guy drove baseline it seemed that we systematically had the weak side help appear to pinch them off. Herman being the exception here. My take is that he as a D-1 body but lacks D-1 quickness (both mental and physical). His reaction time is very poor. On offense, he hurries his shots. For his sake, I hope he develops. He clearly seems to be doing the best he can. Shamar showed me some things last night as well. He played more aggressively than I have seen which is going to be important. Having said that, he got caught insdie a couple times on offense and couldn't really get a shot off due to his size. OVerall, I love our depth. We come at teams in waves and get contributions from lots of places. Jacko and Brown Spiers and Haney all can go for 20+ on any night. Jacko has great touch and I LOVE Brown's floaters. He is really smooth. Things are looking up!!!!

If Marin's absence last night was strategic my guess is it was for the following reasons:
1) Dunlap wanted to create space on offense so that is why he started both Spiers and Haney on the wings. In order to create that space you have to put players out on the wing that the defense respects as outside shooters. While Marin can make the three, I don't think he creates fear in opponents out on the wing.
2) Dunlap makes up for the lack of size and rebounding by creating turnovers. Going into last night's game the Lions were creating 17+ turnovers a game while only committing 12 turnovers per game, a net of 5+ per game. Marin is not very good in the press.
3) While Marin is an exceptional shot blocker, he is not very quick of effective with defensive rotations.
Finally, since the game was competitive and never more than a 6 point (two possession) spread either way until the last 2-3 minutes there was no need to alter Dunlap's game plan because it was working.
