On paper, it would be easy to overlook this game. The Game****s have hree wins over less than stellar opponents. Lots of losses. But they do have scorers and would love an upset over the Lions.
I'm sure Dunlap is warning his guys not to assume a win before the game starts.
Lets see if Jacko can stay in the game more than 10 minutes Friday.
Gametime: Friday, Dec 18 at Gersten. TV: TheW.tv, LMU streaming website
Go Lions!

I suppose you could've typed in "GameChickens" but I suspect Jacksonville State fans would take offense to that.
CMD paid these guys a pretty good sum of money to make the trip to LA. I wish that money had gone to a higher quality opponent.

I wondered where you have been Winter - nice to hear from you again. I've missed your opinions on our games - or are you just sour on Dunlap as coach?

They have lost a few close games to quality teams, I really hope we didn't pay them though, we aren't good enough to be doing that. It'd be nice to get a win going into conference play and get to 3 games above .500, especially with the first two games being at Portland and that other team who is kind of good. I'd really like to see this team stay above .500.

Lmu2015 - I think it's customary for the host team to help pay visitors' expenses. We get the gate proceeds and they have travel costs. Florida is a big trip.

Isn't this a return game? Didn't LMU go there in the recent past?
Also, I prefer a D1 team to D2 or NAIA (Antelope Valley).

90045 - I've been on the travel circuit. Currently out of the country. I've caught a few brief moments of Lions' play (the first couple of games).
The word I got is that we paid Jax State more than enough to cover their expenses. It is typical to pay another team for their travel. I would have preferred a higher caliber opponent since most normal teams have similar travel expenses. We aren't ready for Kentucky, Duke or North Carolina, but I question the value of playing a low major. Of course, Longtime is right. It's better than the Antelope Valley whoever-they-weres.
As far as my opinion of CMD - I'm still not sold, but the jury is going to be out for awhile. The team is doing better. Given the deplorable state of the WCC this year, we've got a good shot at middle of the pack.
I expected Brown to be a quality PG and he seems to be meeting that expectation.
Mornar continues his very inconsistent play. You never know if he is going to star or disappear.
I don't get how Hermann can't have quality games, especially against some of our weak (read: small) competition. He has size and decent movement for a big guy. He really needs to get in there and make things happen.
I disagree with slb regarding Haney (although I don't have much personal viewing to go on). I agree he needs to show a consistent 3-point shot but he seems to know the game. From my limited exposure, the guy knows what to do and where to play. Not the quickest horse on the floor so he needs his shooting touch.
All I have to go is stats, but it seems that Jocko is a good player. He just needs to control his enthusiasm to avoid foul trouble.
I am Sorry that I'm missing the games. I'm hoping to be back for most of the league play.

Despite leading by 12 in the first half, State lost on 12/13 to Alabama State 60-63 on their home court. They enter the Lions' game with a 3 - 9 record.

Vegas has the Lions as 11 point favorites Friday Let's see if they can beat that spread? Maybe some non-rotation players will get another shot at minutes tomorrow. Go Lions!

Should be a relatively easy win. Their front line looks inexperienced, mostly freshman. They have beaten only one division 1 team and may be a little jet lagged. Still the don't seem to go down easily; it looks like nobody has beaten them by over 11 points so I don't think the 11 1/2 spread is all that good of a deal.
On the other hand, Herman might decide to play strong against their the inexperience of their "big's" and if Jocco stays out of foul trouble, the spread could be closer to 20. What the heck - GO LIONS!!(by over 11).

I'm hoping the Lions don't play down to the opponent as past teams have tended to. A win by 20 sounds good to me.
On the Lions website, there is a pre-game interview with Josh Spiers. In the videoclips , which may be old (the Spiers part is current), Humphries is shown practicing with the team. Could his absence have been temporary? At least for me, I hope he is back on the squad. I like his game.
Go Lions!

The admin offered the national anthem 10 minutes before tip off - Jacksonville State went to their locker during the anthem, not too classy in my opinion. Bad omen for them on military appreciation evening at Gersten.
Light crowd - very light.

Not going to get a crowd during winter break. Hopefully Herman can have a good game too, keep building up his confidence going into conference play. Also this could be a trap game with finals ending, no crowd, and game before league.

Given all the circumstances- end of finals week and semester, beginning of holiday/semester break and the WCC season beginning on Monday - I was pretty pleased. The Lions didn't play their best game but didn't play down to the level of their opponent either. And, I agree with Dunlap's statement: the Lions kept Jax St. At "arms length" for almost all of the second half. All in all, I pretty pleased with how the non-conference portion of the schedule worked out. The Lions really played only one poor game - To a good team on the road at Irvine in game 2. Each game following Irvine you saw gradual and continuing improvement. With a break or two and some more even officiating the Lions could have beaten both Colorado State and Oregon State and would have beaten Boise State. So a 7-4 record could (I said could) have been 10-1 but realistically should have been 8-3. The team is much better than last year, deep, apparently healthy and continuing to get better. Jacko, Brown and Haney are + players and Tunis and McClendon are still ascending and may join that group. Tuach is coming off an injury and Herman and Spiers have shown spurts where their play can be the difference in winning. As a result, I'm more excited about WCC play than I've been in a while. I'll be disappointed if the Lions don't return with at least a split of the opening two in the Northwest and if Santa is listening a sweep is what I want for Christmas?
