Welp. BYU's offense woke up. This game looks like it'll be in the 80s but it'll be where BYU wants it.
Jacko cannot get in foul trouble and Tutu can't keep throwing the ball away to have a shot.
Dunlap needs to make a defensive adjustment
If consider slowing down the pace for a bit. BYU doesn't like contested shots or a game in the paint

Agree, wouldn't mind slowing this down.

I don't like this line up, mornar and tuach should be in along with brown and Johnson, then leave in one of the shooters.

Well Jacko is in foul trouble Haney got ice cold, and the PG is throwing up wild shots. They can't seem to slow it down. Dunlap sure has his fans though !

Losing Jacko really hurts. We only have a few guys who can really impact the game. The Cougars have several. I agree we need to settle down a bit. We won't win a track meet. We have to get them unsettled.

Someone needs to reel in both Brown and Tutu. They need to be distributors for their hot shooting teammates. That and control the pace.
On the other end, where's Johnson? He was controlling the paint

No timeouts left, that means this will come down to the final possession.
Edit: maybe the point spread will come down to the final possession, either way we had too many turnovers and didn't rebound well enough in the first half. When you shoot that well you should be up by over 20, and then you need to have a good first 5 minutes of the 2nd half and hold the lead. BYU relied on their senior leadership, which is something we don't have. Exciting game to watch vs a very good BYU team, hopefully the cold shooting doesn't roll over to the USD game.

Collinsworth took the game over in the second half and we had no answer .
I think we finally succumbed to frenetic pace. While I thought it was a lot to do with the panicky point guards , I saw Dunlap constantly calling to push the pace. I think this was the wrong move in the second half.

It's been a noble effort. I suspect the guys learned a few things. The Cougars are a tough match up with so many weapons. It was asking a lot for our guys to keep up.
I agree our point guards under performed. They were caught up in the action and failed to control the game when we really needed them to.
I liked Jacko playing significant minutes with four fouls. Maybe he learned something about avoiding fouls. When he's on the court he's really impressive.
I didn't see too many good set shots for Haney in the second half. He needs more good screens.
I'm not impressed with Tuach. He has good athletic ability but hasn't learned how to convert those tools into basketball skills.
Haney and Spiers got out-toughed a number of times. It's a tough game and BYU knows how to play tough.
It would sure help to have one or two guys who are 6'10" or so. But I guess that's stating the obvious.
Despite the negatives, the game served to show the rest of the league needs to worry about the Lions.
Now, let's thrash the Toreros!

Progress is being made. In the second LMU's shooting cooled off, it had too, but do did the rotations on defense. Nonetheless, they fought hard to the end and ran out of gas in the last minute when BYU hit two dagger threes. The first 38 minutes showed the progress that has been building pretty steadily. Need more time and players but this group hasn't topped out.

I'm just waiting for Herman to turn into an animal one of these days and start controlling the boards, as athletic and strong johnson and jacko are, they are giving up anywhere from 2-4 inches every night. Hopefully Manuel/Sykes helps out with that next year, and maybe we can still get Kalif Young. Since we offered him, he has received offers from Pittsburgh and Providence, and Duke was also showing interest along with some other elite programs. He is described as a rebounding machine, and we could really use that.

Hermann is so frustrating. I've watched him practice. He's impressive. He has a great body for playing inside, moves well, has good hands. He looks like the real deal. ... Then, the scoreboard lights up, play begins and he turns into a statue. We've waited a season and a half for him to wake up and it hasn't happened. Even against weak, short DII teams, he simply doesn't put his tools to good advantage.

I agree with what many people have said here. However, and I don't know if this is just because I can't stand anything to do with BYU, but I thought that there were a few horrible calls that really hurt our momentum.
Specifically, I thought there were a quite a few no-calls that hurt the lions (I think it was brown that full on got hit in the face and quite a few reach ins and calls where a BYU player would just be swinging wildly surrounded by LMU guys and manage to get the foul call), and bad calls (Humphries was definitely in motion for the foul and should have been a 3 point play). Of course, like I said, I can't stand BYU. I find them and their fans to be very smug, so that's probably why.

Calls went both ways. There was a no call on an obvious Humphries travel that looked like it might be a critical miss by the refs. Of course, our poor play in the last few minutes of the game made that no call a moot issue.
BYU plays aggressive but I don't have a problem with that. If you want to play DI ball, you need to recognize that BB at the higher levels is tough. Shoot, I've played in city and church leagues that are aggressive. Some of our guys get it (Jacko and Johnson for example). Others don't. Last night Spiers, Hermann,Haney and Mornar were out-toughed pretty consistently. I don't think the Cougars played dirty and I do think the refs let the guys play, which I prefer over games where refs seem to competing to see who can blow their whistle the most.
If I were CMD, I'd splice together a film of collinsworth's many strong, aggressive plays, show it to the team and tell them that is how they need to play for 40 minutes every game.

One thing killed us, and was the cause of all the other let downs mentioned here...poor passing/turnovers. You cannot let a team steal three passed in a row and then constantly have your lazy passing picked off for scores each time and expect to win. BYU stepped up D coverage and we folded. The point work in the first half was excellent, Brown threw us a couple of 3's to keep the D honest, and accurately passed the ball. The Second half was the mirror opposite. Brown failed to take any outside shots, continued to forced penetration and had the ball easily stolen from him at least 3 times for turn overs. He also began lazy passing, which often was directly to the defense. Then Jacko did it, then Haney did, then Tutu did it several times, and then the rest of the guys....it was amazing. These turnovers killed our momentum. And, because they were continuous turnovers through the last part of the 2d half, we were never able to recover our momentum. 3/4's Good Game. 1/4 stink ball. We still have a bunch of 'head cases'. They lose focus too easily. For the opposite result at point, look at what Collinsworth did the second half.
If we can ever put together 2 halves like that first, though, we'll sweep the tourney!
