slb - thanks for the research. In the early going, I expect we'll see a lot of Jovanovic, Jacko and Johnson on the front line at the same time - perhaps with Jacko at SF if you need a label. Jovanovic at Center and Johnson at PF. PG will be Brown and Tutu as noted but SG likely will be Haney backed up by Gipson and McClendon. That's a pretty big lineup on the court. Later on when Manuel becomes eligible, there will be musical chairs on the front line possibly with Manuel replacing Johnson up front if Manuel is as good as his credentials. Label-wise, it would be Manuel as SF and Jacko as PF along with Jovanovic. Jacko can get time at Center as well and so will Herman, who showed promise as a backup center. Frankly, I don't expect to see Hayes back next year. Sykes - I don't know much about.

From ESPN’s recruiting site: Stefan Jovanovic6-10, 235 | Class of 2013 • Hometown: Torrance, Calif. • School: Bishop Montgomery High School • Position: Center • Status Signed: Hawaii Scouts grade 60, 2 star Rated #79 in Cal, #68 at Center ESPN Analyst Updated 05/28/2013Strengths:Jovanovic has a lengthy frame (long arms) with excellent hands and he's fairly bouncy. He runs well and can finish in transition off the pass. He has a nice touch around the basket and can even handle the ball out on the perimeter. Weaknesses: Jovanovic is still quite raw, especially on the offensive end. He needs to polish his post fundamentals (keeping the ball high) and footwork (plays too straight-up-and-down). In addition, his overall feel for the game is still in it's rudimentary stages. Bottom Line: In the class of 2013, there is a dearth of bigs on the west coast, thus Jovanovic is going to get some recruiting attention. He is far from a finished product, but there is some definite upside with this evolving big man. From Hawaii’s website: hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=14575&path=mbball 2014-15 (Sophomore): Played in 31 games with 10 starts in the post...averaged 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while posting 28 blocks on the season...shot .483 for the season...had a career-high 15 points in team's regular-season finale win at Cal State Fullerton (3/7), shooting 5-6 from the floor and pulling down four rebounds...posted a double-double at Chaminade (12/19) with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds...had 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting from the floor against CSU Bakersfield (11/15) in the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic...had eight points (4-5) in UH's upset of Pittsburgh (11/21)...shot 4-6 from the floor for eight points against Colorado (12/25) in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic...scored five points and snared nine rebounds against CSUN (1/10)...had eight points and six rebounds at Cal Poly (2/5)...recorded nine points and pulled down six boards vs. UC Riverside (2/12). 2013-14 (Freshman): Reserve post player appeared briefly in 10 games…shot 7-of-13 (.538) from the field and 4-of-6 (.667) from the line…scored in four of 10 contests he appeared in…played three minutes in season-opener, notching one rebound and one assist vs. Tennessee State (Nov. 8).. played eight minutes vs. UH-Hilo (Nov. 21).. scored two points and grabbed five rebounds versus the Vulcans...four points in four minutes vs. New Orleans (Nov. 27)...made first appearance in eight games, recording six points in four minutes against Omaha (Jan. 3)...played a season high 12 minutes vs. UC Riverside (Jan. 18), posting six points and four rebounds. Personal: Born in Serbia…intends to major in accounting…parents are Zoran and Milanka Jovanovic of Kraljevo, Serbia. Last season, he played behind (believe it or not) 6’11” 235 Stefan Jankovic, who was Hawaii’s team-leading scorer at 15+ ppg and this year is declaring for the NBA draft. Sorry for all the posts but I just viewed the video on Roar's site and I am seriously impressed. Jovanovic is a banger inside, which we sorely needed. He's ready to mix things up with strong inside play. And he already has that "sky hook" that Dunlap has been trying to teach his bigs. In short, he is the Herman that Dunlap hopes to continue developing but Stefan is already there! A great recruit. Should make for an exciting season next year and some practice sessions that stimulate our current bigs to further step up their game. Way to go Dunlap.

Very impressive! What I liked most about the 5-minute video within the LMU Lions Roar story was that he rebounded nearly every blocked shot. He did not just block the ball into the fifth row. He controlled the block and started fast breaks.
Bill Russell would be proud!

Ugh... I wish I was as excited about this guy as everyone else seems to be, I just don't see a guy who is that good. I think Herman's highlight real would be more impressive. His athleticism is on par with Ben Dickinson and he isn't that big. I think he will be a solid player who will play about 15-20 minutes, and get us around 5 points and 5 boards per game, while playing solid defense on the opposing teams center. It is a solid pick up, but I think Johnson and Herman are both capable of doing the same thing. Maybe Herman and Johnson aren't as good as post defenders, but i would say are probably better when it comes to switching onto perimeter players.
Again, solid pick up, but I don't think this is a guy that takes is from middle of the pack to that 4th spot.
I do think this gives our line up a lot more flexibility with going big or small too. Personally I like the two PG line up, so we could go small with Brown, Tutu, Haney, Manuel, Jacko... Really small with Brown, Tutu, Mcclendon/Gipson, Haney, Jacko. Big with Brown/Tutu, Tuach, Haney, Jacko, Jovanovic. Or really big, with Brown/Tutu, Haney, Manuel, Jacko, Jovanovic.

I think he is a decent pick up. Off the +300 is this the best guy CMD can get? I would rather have gotten a guy who sits out a year and has more of impact in the long run. Jovanovic just joins the long list of players (below) that leaves after graduation next year.
Brown Jacko Johnson Tuach Hayes (if he doesn't get cut this year)
I know bigs hard to come by I think CMD and staff could have done better. I have never been a fan of Herman (though he improved play at the end of the year) so may Jovanovic is an upgrade.

Ayer played a number of years in the professional "D" league, which isn't shabby. OK, he missed a critical bunny - get over it. Besides, that's Lions Roar expressing his opinion (not to disparage his opinion) not the consensus of professional scouts. (Are you a pro scout Lions Roar? Maybe you should be.) I think the pooh-poohers on Stefan will be proven wrong - he looks good to me.

All I have to go on are the same videos everyone else is seeing. Personally, he looks to me to be a Petr Hernann with skill. I'd consider him an upgrade.
Dunlap has to find some inside help for Jacko. If he doesn't, coaches are going to smother Jacko inside. This new guy looks like a much bigger threat than Hermann or Johnson. He might do the trick.
Dunlap seems to have a team going into next season that could be pretty decent. But I too am concerned about the roster turnover we will see next year. CMD had better come up with one heck of a recruiting class next year.

Not to get ahead, but after next year a line up with tutu, McClendon/Gipson, Haney, Manuel, Sykes/Herman should be decent. tutu, Haney, and Manuel could be a pretty good trio in two years.

Great comments Winter - Dunlap will have a number of slots to fill next year - let's hope he works some magic and gets some top recruits. He hasn't done too bad excepting his first crop of newcomers. I think next year's record will be encouraging to interested players and might bring some top recruits to LA. Wishful thinking? Go Lions!

Based upon a review of the videos on IronLion's site and a statistical comparison I think this is a good and significant pick-up as last year he was statistically better than Shamar Johnson in scoring and rebounding and a better shot blocker than Marin Mornar. I'll explain.
Stefan played in all 34 Hawaii games, including two NCAA Tournament games. He averaged 15.55 minutes per game. He also averaged 4.9 ppg and 4 rpg. Shamar averaged 5.5 ppg and 4.2 rpg in 20.9 minutes per game. In other words, Stefan had essentially the same per game stats while playing on average 5 LESS MINUTES PER GAME.
Stefan's ppg projected over 40 minutes = 12.6; his rpg per 40 minutes project to 10.28. Shamar's ppg projected over 40 minutes = 10.55; his rpg projected over 40 minutes = 8.08. So over a hypothetical full 40 minute game Stefan averaged roughly 2 points and 2 more rebounds than Shamar.
And, for those diminishing Petr Herman's development over the year, these same numbers show something very interesting too. Petr averages 11.4 minutes per game and his minutes weren't very uniform, although they trended up as the year went on. So Petr's sample size skews a bit more than Stefan's and Shamar's but Petr's numbers: 3.7 ppg and 2.8 rpg project to 40 minutes numbers of 12.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per 40 minutes.
And adding another player who can score down low together with the return of Adom and the mid-semester addition of Trevor should help create more space for wing shooters Haney, Tuach, Gibson & Spiers.
Defensively, in addition to a big body Stefan also give the Lions a shot blocker to replace Marin's shot blocking abilities. Marin had 38 blocks in 676 minutes or 0.056 blocks per minute played. Stefan had 35 blocks in 529 minutes or .066 blocks per minute played.
So statistically last year Stefan was a slightly better scorer and rebounder than Shamar and a slightly better shot blocker than Marin. I'd call that a good and significant addition.

I see this move as finally a sense of urgency that next year is a big year. When does a conference ever have half new coaches? Portland, San Francisco, Pacific, Santa Clara are all starting their rebuild. The Lions should be automatically in the 5th slot, with San Diego and the aforementioned teams behind.
Of course, a couple years ago I was upset that Dunlap's move was just to pick up transfers. There will be a mass exodus next year. Remaining afterwards will be a trio of Tutu, Haney and Manuel which should be enough to compete but obviously there are still holes. I think CMD needs to prove to potential recruits however that he has the coaching acumen to not only get more wins and losses, prove to be a better Xs and Os coach that will give his guys the best chance to succeed, but to also develop his players to play professionally. So far the only guys that we have been able to do that are Good's old relics, Anthony, Drew and Ashley.
Huge year for the future of program IMO. Husak wont dump Dunlap because he is too lazy to make a real coaching search (unless Snyder prioritizes the program). But if they do well, CMD can continue to sell his kool-aid. Fail, and what recruit is knocking down the door?

The post NCAA career of Jacko will be very important to our program too. Taking a kid from JUCO to Pro will help the recruiting, and if Jacko puts up close to 20 points and 10 boards a game in league play like he did at the end of last season, he should have no problem making a summer league team, and may even get invited to a few draft workouts.
