Fortunately, Portland lost to SCU last weekend despite guard Wintering scoring 31 points vs SCU Browridge's pro-style 38 points .
Right now, Portland and the Lions are tied for 8th place in the WCC with 3-8 records and this game I rate as an important milestone for the season after our poor loss in Portland. Portland plays the up-and-coming Waves before our contest in Malibu. Likely, we'll be tied with weak 3-9 records when we meet this Saturday.
We'll have the reliable Humphries on the court this weekend who might be a difference maker. I'm assuming Jacko will play the whole game and Brown will contribute his usual 15 points or so.
Gametime: Saturday, February 6, 3 pm at Gersten. TV (video): TheW.tv

Portland beats Pepperdine en route to LMU - thanks for peaking when the Pilots meet the Lions But the Lions are also coming off a strong game vs the Zags (or are we?)

I figured we'd finish about 5-13. Right now that's going to be lucky. They'll have to win this home game against Portland because after that it will be rough to grab 2. Right now we sit all alone in last. A 5-13 should at least give us 8th place but if they lose to Portland they might be stuck at best 9th.

The Pilots have an excellent PG and they thrive on their 3-point shooting. Since CMD doesn't seem to have much interest in guarding the arc, this will be a tough one to win.

Is this a Ripley's item or not? The Lions are FAVORED by 2.5 points tomorrow vs Portland at Gersten, even after the Pilots beat the Waves Thursday. Husky - how about this bet? More concrete loafers?

The line has moved to 1.5 and may swing another couple of points by gametime. I see some logic here, in Portland Jacko fouled out with 4 points; lately he has averaged over 20 PPG. If Portland makes only 10 "threes" instead of 14 we have a game. Then this crop of odds makers must see a more traditional home court advantage here in So Cal than actually exists especially for Gonzaga, BYU and Saint Mary's who's fans often seem to outnumber us. Assuming some student support we hopefully will have a homecourt advantage today. So GO Lions!! (Please!)
More bizarre is the 6.5 Gonzaga spread at Pepperdine. Guess they don't respect the Zags because of their 5 losses (by a total of 15 points) against ranked teams (except of BYU) with. It may be more economical for the good fellas to save the expense of cement shoes, wait a few day's, say 14 Feb. and herd all the losing odds makers into a Garage.

I too was surprised at the Waves-Zags line especially in light of Thursday's results. I'm hoping Jacko has another big game and that he gets better support this afternoon. C'mon Lions!

That was the first time this year Dunlap brought out the 1-1-3 zone. I personally don't get it or like it, but our defense is awful so we may as well give it a try.

Portland is not a good team. Wintering is a very good PG. it's too bad for him that he doesn't have some good running mates. The Zags could really use him!
LMU2015 is right. Our defense is atrocious. In CMDs many training films he stressed the importance of guarding the half circle above the FT line. Yet time after time both today and last Thursday this area is left wide open.
And how many times are we going to give up the baseline?
As I've said before, either CMD isn't stressing these things in practice or the guys aren't getting it. But these are really basic basketball principles.

And I don't get the 1-1-3 defense either, especially ehen you've got your slowest guy at the point. There's no way he can recover quick enough. Humphries hustles a lot but it's unfair to expect him to cover that position.

Awful start to the half, the energy isn't there at all.

At the 10 minute mark, Wintering is 9 for 12 and Tyson is 7 for 10, the latter mostly from 3 Dunlap is out of timeouts also
