Been a while since I've posted. The team came out the gate looking very good after stunning then ranked UCLA out the gate and then getting a win on the road against another PAC-12 team Arizona (without Gabby Green!)
Since then, we've struggled with some injuries, first Gabby... Who is still out, and then Chelsey with the concussion.
Lately however, the ladies are turning things around and have a couple of great wins in the past couple of weeks, including upsetting #25 BYU.
My buddy Dave and I have talked about lack of movement particularly off ball, and how we have not been able to open up anything much on offense.
That seems to have changed now, as the coaches have seemed to have responded and the team has obviously worked hard... And it is showing!
Chelsey is playing phenomenal and her stats are excellent. She sits at the top of the WCC is three point shooting and scoring. Fellow sophomore Jasmine Jones is also doing well and really scoring, which is important to try to take up the void that Gabby brings to our team. Additionally Cierra brings great defense and our senior Velasco sisters are also providing leadership. Of course Bree and her rebounding under the basket must be acknowledged! And last but not least, Rachael continues to be a strong presence any time she's in the paint. I think Gabby will be back soon.
Chelsey had this to say in an interview of the Loyalian:
The Lions were led by sophomore guard Chelsey Gipson, who scored a game-high 24 points shooting 8-12 from the field (against SD). Gipson praised the team’s offensive preparation and execution as some of the keys to the win.
“We worked a lot this week [on] just moving the ball, finding open areas [and] passing into the middle, which creates open shots on the perimeter,” she said.
That pretty much sums it up. IF we continue to work hard and move the ball, shoot well and make our free throws, we can beat any team in the WCC, including the nationally ranked Zags! Go Lions!! Let's close out the season and the WCC tourney LION STRONG!!!
