It’s not a tough loss it’s an inexcusable bad loss and we won’t be 3rd in conference for much longer

It’s hard to understand the apparent sudden collapse of the Lions. I hope I’m wrong but it feels like issues that go beyond the playing court?

My take is that without Big Rick, our defense has really suffered as we can't stop penetration of the quicker guards who are picking us apart. The defensive weakness definitely affects our offense as we aren't getting blocks and steals which feed our transition game. As far as our set offense is concerned, teams have adjusted to Cam's penetration and "pivot-in-the-key post up game" that had been so effective there for a while. Jalin has stepped up hitting more threes than I have ever seen him make and Graham has been terrific with offensive rebounds and put backs. Keli has been decent but, like Cam he's drawing more attention when he puts the ball on the floor. Our designated three point shooters have been just OK but they are streaky. They are also not our best defenders. Alex can provide offense but he's a step slow on D and often gets exposed when he switches and is guarding a quicker opponent. After our 4 game win streak, I was hoping we could go 4-3 in the final seven. We are 0-2 and could easily go 2-5 in our final 7 if we don't make adjustments. I hope Rick comes back soon and that Lamaj's injury wasn't serious. It's gut check time.

Golions - just trying to find a reasonable explanation for our team’s collapse in the recent two games. Perhaps it is just the absence of Issanza. Terrible fouling without him in the USD game; the Torreros made 27 free throws to our 8.

Issanza is definitely missed but he was playing well under half the time, so his current absence is not a full explanation for the sudden breakdown… certainly not in the San Diego game.
I get why the offense gets stopped. Coach Stan simply hasn’t introduced any alternative game plans. Jalin has had some success because he’s sort of a “cowboy” on the floor - and you never know what he’s going to do. He makes dumb decisions at times but he’s the one player in the Lions’ roster who opponents don’t really know what he’s going to do. Our 2 outside threats are streaky because they both need help getting open. Neither is quick enough or capable of creating their own shots. Coach Stan needs to develop some plays that will help them, and give the offense another dimension. Watch the BYU game and count the number of times their 3-point shooters were given screens that set them up for open looks. A lot of the streakiness that shooters suffer is due to how open their looks are and their level of confidence in how many times they’ll get those open looks. Coach Stan’s offense is predictable and opposing coaches watch lots of game film. We are not hard to shut down.
On defense there’s not a player on the team who is a good one-on-one defender. When everyone super hustles, they have a good team defense. BUT they’ve GOTTA HUSTLE! Certainly lacking Issanza hurt in the BYU game because Graham doesn’t have the size or strength to neutralize Traore. And for all his offensive talent, Leaupepe is a poor defender. But against San Diego?? There is no excuse. The Toreros had open looks from beyond the arc all game long. No excuse for that because San Diego has nothing that’s even close to Traore. The team doesn’t have enough talent to ever let up. I don’t think they realize that.
Maybe there is something going on that we aren’t seeing. Or maybe the team started to think, “This is easy.” I don’t know. But I do know that Coach Stan is going to lose that fan enthusiasm he was working so hard to attain.

I completely missed the game, and thank goodness I did, but without Big Rick did we even try to mix in a zone defense?

I agree, coach has not put effective sets to free our boys to shoot, but the boys (other than Cam & Anderson) just stand around, waiting for the bus or something.
