Where is Garribay playing this year? I can not find any writing or stats about him. I heard he went to a prep school but you would think there would be some information on the web about him. Could anyone please fill me in?

I've seen some stuff that indicates he is at Joe Abnussar's Impact Academy in Vegas. Abnussar trains a lot of pro ballplayers and I'm somewhat unclear if Garibay just trained there or whether he is part of a new post-grad type program. I believe the latter is the case. We desperately need this kid to honor his commitment. Anyone with a clue realized LMU had absolutely zero chance of keeping Vinson after Bayno vanished, but I believe there is a fairly good chance we could hold on to the big kid from Compton. www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/view/6271764?tag=Edgar%20Garibay

I saw Garibay a lot of games at the beginning of the season. He also played alot of pick up ball with the team during the summer. I'm sure he is friends with them and plans to honor his commitment. However, there are a lot of vultures out there now.

So is he not playing organized ball right now? Just training and playing pickup? Has anyone on the board seen him play in person? And if so, who would you compare him to? Is he comparable to say an Omar Samham in terms of skill level?

I saw him play once over the summer. He is a space eater with great foot work. Has good hands and some nice post moves. What is really intriguing is he can step out and shoot it from far. I really think he would have averaged way more points in high school if his team mate wasn't Demar Derozan (sp?) who put massive ppg and is at SC.

Yeah, Iron - being a L.A. kid who is familiar with the school and players is the only reason I don't think it's a given that he'll get poached, although I'd guess he's far from a sure thing at this point. A big concern could be USC. For one thing, former teamate Derozan might stay, and either way I'm sure that Floyd and L'il Romeo will be on him like flies on sh*t.

I'm sure SC will be sniffing around. They have 4 bigs on their roster already.

I am almost positive we will be seeing Mr. Garibay next year. He just updated his facebook a couple of days ago to show that he will be studying Communications/Journalism with a minor in English at Loyola Marymount. Also on his myspace. Also on his myspace on jan 30 he said he is going to be playing his college basketball at LMU. All Good Signs! ;D
Can wait to see him as a Lion next year! Him and a now 90! rated Given will make us a verrry solid team next year.

Garibay is at Impact Basketball Academy (NV). Shown as 6'10" and 225 lbs, he is rated #70 at the center position. Here is the recent ESPN posting on his game - still rated 80 and shows as signed by LMU.
"February, 2009: Despite his size, Garibay can step away from the hoop and make jumpers even from 3-point range. He has a slow release and may not get the shot off when he faces quicker interior players. When he steps in the paint, he has to increase the speed on his post moves and add counter moves to his post arsenal, given the fact that he does not have great athleticism. Garibay also needs to improve his hands to enable him to better handle passes in the paint when in traffic. He also has to alleviate his tendency to avoid contact and fade on jumpers, which negates his size."
It could be more flattering but with good coaching, he will learn fast in the WCC. PS His name is spelled with one "r."

There is a reason why memphis, gtown, indiana, usc and unlv were interested in Edgar. He will be great for us. College coaches will "show interest" in almost anyone (especially post players) that show solid D1 potential just in case the kid's game develops/explodes quickly, so they then can have the recruiting advantage of saying they were "interested" from the start.

This is a old article from Scout.com before he commited to LMU.
Edgar Garibay, 6-10 JR C Compton (Calif.) High, is one of the most sought-after big men in the West Coast class of 2008. We spoke with Garibay recently and he listed the main schools involved in his recruitment at the moment. “USC, Louisville, Arizona State, UCLA, Memphis and Washington State,” said Garibay.
We asked him which schools have offered a scholarship.
“USC, Louisville, ASU, Memphis and Washington State have all offered,” said Garibay.
Garibay took an unofficial visit to Louisville recently and he talked a little about his visit.
“It was real cool,” said Garibay. “I liked the facilities and they had good people there. The coaches are good and the players were cool. I got to spend some time with Derrick Caracter and he told me it was a good place to get focused and work on your game.”
We asked Garibay if he has a leader.
"No, they're all still even right now," said Garibay.
Garibay said he may take some more trips after his season ends.
“I was talking with my coach about maybe taking a visit to Arizona State after the season is over,” said Garibay. “And I might visit Memphis when the season ends also.”
Garibay talked a little about what he’s looking for in a school.
“I want to go somewhere that will do a lot of individual work with me – someplace that can help me get to the next level,” said Garibay. “I’d like to go someplace that has good facilities and good coaching, where I can showcase my talent.”
Let go of your grudge Sunken!

Hi LMU2008 This is indeed the latest scouting report shown on ESPN Insider's recriting link. Insider requires a subscription but not too bad to keep up with the official info on the players - Vinson (93), Garibay (80), Kaplinde (90) and our new rumored recruit Quincy Lawson (88).

Checked again and Garibay's rating has gone up to 84 and his ranking is still now #70 for centers.
