A guy is in early 60s and is unquestionably an accomplished basketball coach.
His personal upside in taking the LMU job is negligible.
If it is for his son, do you really think that three or fouryears from now a then 27 year old coach will be ready to take over the program? Possible, yes, but mostly doubtful.
And you assume that his name alone, which a lot of kids would associate with a failure at Golden State, is going to substantially improve recruiting.
And then you look at next year's schedule which is a ball buster from what Ihear and assess the talent that Rodney Tention assembled which most observers don't think is great.
Add to that the institutional advantage that Gonzaga, St. Mary's and San Diego now have and how soon do you really think LMU can contend for the conference title.
Montgomery is a lot more savvy than I am and a helluva lot better observer of basketball.
But from where I sit, It doesn't add up.
If he does it, he'll be father of the year.
But it doesn't feel like a recipe for success for either LMU or Montgomery.

Monty's upside on coming to LMU is: 1) Restore a program that has experienced over 18 years of futility. A major challenge. 2) Restore coaching legacy. The Golden State situation was not the greatest.....Bringing an underdog to the NCAA and going a couple rounds in would erase all that memory. 3) Setting up your son, who has loyalties to LMU, with a defined career path and doing your absolute best to prepare him for the future. 4) Having the greatest time of your life and enjoying it with your son. How great is that to share basketball with your son who admires his father. 5) Coming home to Southern California and enjoying the weather. It is much better for heath reasons than Northern California. There are many other reasons, but I think that is enough to pursuade Mr. Michael Montgomery to come to LMU. GET THE DEAL DONE, HUSAK! Announcement next Wednesday, right?

Gents...
understand I'm not a blind Lion loyalist and I am of the belief that the A.D. is simply not up to the task of building a program. It is arguable that he moved too fast on Aggers. It is inarguable that he should have never hired Bradley or Tention. So his track record is, at best, spotty.
If they sign Montgomery, it would be a great p.r. move to be sure.
Does Monty have gas in the tank?
If so, can he hang in there long enough to find his kind of players (knowing how he recruitedat Montana and at Stanford, I'm pretty sure the existing squad isn't his kind of team)
Will he mind getting his ass kicked in the interim?
All fair questions.
That said, it would be a great hire for perception sakes and right now Husak needs good perception.

I agree that it is not a slamdunk to bring Monty here. I am glad that at least Husak is persuing him. Could have easily brushed aside the notion as to not get people's expectations set high. Aiming high is never a problem.
Besides John has a sweet house in Playa I'm sure he'd like to return to. Better than some dusty streets in Carolina.

Monty reps the 562 and went to LBSU. Maybe he wants to come back to the Southland where he grew up. Lets all chip in and buy him a place in Belmont Shores. We'll get his son a nice place next to Big G's Liquor in Inglewood. Sounds like a deal that can't be turned down.

From where I sit-provided the administration is competent and is willing to commit the $$ to do it right, there is no reason a school with the campus and location of LMU can't win big....
My fear is that the administration is not willing to spend what it takes to get it done, and get it done right. Much as Westhead was the right guy for the school at the time, so is Montgomery...and a failure to not hire him and give him what it takes to win in terms of facilities and support tells me it's time to clean the place out, starting at the top....many of the administrators that made this mess have been there way, way too long....
