This makes no sense to me. Why would you leave a private university headed towards the top one of the strongest leagues to a Cal State that finished at the bottom of the Big West. Is losing 5-10 minutes a game really worth it?! Additionally, I guarantee LMU will get a lot more TV coverage than UC Riverside!!! Not to mention he will have to sit out a whole year. This really makes me pissed.

I think with KY'd rumored decision to go to UCR then his departure is more suspect. Ie. I'm not sure it was unilaterally his decision (coupled with his desire to remain silent on the move). Good pickup for the highlanders but seriously it makes sense. Where else would he feasibly go? Pac 10, no way. MWC, no. Wcc, not likely. Big West, yea.

Say it ain't so Kevin.
I really hope that's not true. If it is - he really really must have not liked playing here. If it was at all tolerable for him I can't imagine this move.
It's closer to home. That's it. Everything else is a big step down. Heck - I would think with his play over the past few years he could have done a nice lateral move or even a small step up. UCR is a step down for sure.
As a fan of yours Kevin - I hope to goodness you are making the right move for yourself. Good Luck! God Bless!

Fanblade -
I don't know. If the coaches didn't think Kevin was going to work for the future of the team - I think there are a few guys that would be higher up on the "do not renew" list. Kevin has only two years left and has some great playing time under his belt so I would think his next two years will be more productive then his past. And some upper-class maturity would be helpful on the team.
I can never know the interpersonal makeup of the team and the coaches. Who gets along with who. Who is a "problem" or whatnot. But its hard for me to imagine the coaching staff showing him the door. I don't know if we will ever know and ultimately whats done is done - but it's an interesting situation non the less.

the quote in the article is very telling... there are players out there that are more talented and have a better fit for the program out there willing to come to this school... dont be too upset

Still - I tend to agree with you that it is unlikely that the coaches would have asked KY to leave as he got good minutes and was a prime starter. There may have been personality issues on the team not just with the coach, there may be academic issues as well, UCR will be less demanding than LMU in the classroom. Riverside does have a decent player in Kyle Austin - maybe Kevin thinks he can learn from him?? UCR has 7 Seniors leaving so KY will probably get more minutes in two years. I wish him the best but I agree it looks like a step down in the basketball area. Has UCR sent anyone to the pros? Lately?

Hey Iron - - - if the rumors are true about getting a really great kid (not just a basketball player) from Findlay, I hope you won't still be pissed. It's Kevin's decision, right or wrong. Be happy - if you've been to a zoo you know that there's nothing worse than lion piss.

I sometimes forget how unhappy ky was on the bench. I will be happy for him where ever he ends up.

Perris was a long drive for his parents to come to games - I agree that may have been an influence if he wanted his family at games (or vice versa).

This is interesting...check this one out: www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/2010-04-19-rutgers-rosario-transfer-florida_N.htmRosario is Kevin Young's teammate from the FIBA 19 and under squad for Puerto Rico. Rosario was having a big tourney got a lot of attention, continued to be solid at Rutgers and now is headed to Florida for bigger minutes? Seems to me like they were on the phone or facebook chat with each other and decided to make some decisions for themselves. I just hope that KY knows that Rosario is going to FLORIDA and Billy Donovan for that...big difference of going to UC Riverside. Perhaps Young had some international dreams though, get more playing time and be more of a leader on the team and keep the spot on Puerto Rico's regular team?

Rosario made 55 points in one of the games last summer in New Zealand.

I never got the impression that his parents (and entire family) resented that drive. They were always very into the games, pleasant, supportive people. I truly doubt that a player would transfer to make the drive shorter for his family. There has to be more to this equation.
Kevin is looking for something different. We don't know what, or why - just that a young many is looking for his place. I wish him well, and hope he finds the right road to travel.
God bless, Kevin. Safe travels.

Rumors of Kevin going to UC Riverside have not borne out. UCR has signed 9 new players for next season including 5 JC transfers - no KY mentioned even in their press. So where is Kevin headed? I have half a notion that he would have liked to join up with Rosario again (both on the PR national team last summer) but Rosario is headed to Florida - no way KY. No mention of Kevin on the SDSU recruiting site either. Biola maybe?

Unfortunately for KY, as myself and others predicted, his decision to transfer seems to have been ill advised to say the least. He is a good player, but realistically a place like LMU was about as good as it was going to get for him.
At the end of the day, I guess we should hope he lands on his feet in a situation that is workable for him. But I can't help but think he is a bonehead and/or got some really poor advice. Biola? Yikes!

Kevin most likely didn't believe the advice he received about transfer requirements, GPA's, etc. I actually know of other players that did something similar, and were left out in the cold.
You need a 2.0 (minimum) to transfer to a Div. 1 school. And many schools require more. In addition - if you have burned 2 years of eligibility, you can't go the JC route (at least not as a player).
If he leaves LMU, and doesn't have the GPA standard - the only way back into a D1 program is to go to a JC and get his associates degree. And he can't play there, because JC's are Frosh/Soph only.
So many schools are concerned now with their ratings, that they are very hesitant touching transfers that don't have strong GPAs. And with Kevin's outbursts during a televised game.... he might be in a difficult position.
