Things are really bad a USF right now. I really didn't like Jessie Evans but the way he was pushed out mid season for this circus act is really unprofessional. What coach in their right mind would want to work for a AD that pulls stunts like this.

It's a real shame for those players. Seems like this just gets worse and worse for them. I know LMU has struggled but I could never see our AD being as inept as this. The house will have to be cleaned after this mess.

Funny how some of us overreacted over the hire of Eddie Sutton by calling RT onto the hot seat, now nobody wishes to be in USF's position.
From reading Dons' board, some players were missing from practice...looking elsewhere perhaps? Who can blame them.

Funny how some of us overreacted over the hire of Eddie Sutton by calling RT onto the hot seat, now nobody wishes to be in USF's position. From reading Dons' board, some players were missing from practice...looking elsewhere perhaps? Who can blame them. I will say that USF is getting MAJOR PUBLICITY. ANY PUBLICITY IS GOOD PUBLICITY. This morning when watching ESPN (Big 10 college basketball match), the announcers were talking about Sutton and USF. They also mentioned what a quality conference the WCC is. Specifically saying "The WCC is a qualilty mid-major conference with Gonzaga and St. Mary's this year. Not to mention other schools in the conference that consistently put a quality team on the court like Santa Clara and San Diego." Missing from their rambling list was LMU. The Sutton thing is a good thing for USF. Evans was not going to get them to the next level. A firing mid-season is the RIGHT thing for the situation. If you are going to fire (oh, sorry....let Evans resign) mid-season, you are not going to get a LONG-TERM fit head coach in mid-season. I am not a believer in letting an assistant coach be an interim head coach. As such, the AD probably went for what was best for the program and the players. Sutton knows how to coach...who else would have been a better interim coach that was available? ? Sure it is not the best situation, but they had to do SOMETHING. Oh, by the way...USF has 4 wins...1 more than LMU. With that being said....the real and fair measure is conference play....what if USF finishes higher in conference than LMU? What would that say about our program? I sure hope it does not happen, but what if it does? I don't think RT is out of the woods. I know the university is supposedly "serious" about winning (aka...Lawton's comments earlier this year), but what is on the floor currently...I don't see us contending for a WCC title next year. It would be 2009-2010 at earliest (which is still blissfully and hopefully bias thinking on my part). Lawton's contract is up 2011. He has already extended his tenure and individuals within LMU administration mention that he was debating to reup. As such, we can assume 2011 will most likely be his last year. I am not sure if this give us too much time to turn things around with the Men's basketball program. AD or RT may be on a shorter leash than most of us realize (that is if Lawton is truly serious about turning around LMU Athletics....jury's still out on that).

maybe i should start captalizing my phrases to get the points across...hehe
no, i don't believe any publicity is good publicity, i know that's what marketing guy told you but i don't believe it. Clemens and Pettite both getting major publicity these days, do you think that's good publicity? Dons getting publicity on how they just want to ride along with Sutton when he gets his 800th win. That's good publicity for Sutton not USF. The Dons have sold their soul to an alcoholic...AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE TOO!
WCC has been known as a conference of Gonzaga with seven dwarfs, this year being an exception due to st. mary's success, but frankly I don't care about WCC, I only care about LMU. WCC can be as great as pac-10 but if we only have a 3-12 record then we are a 3-12 team, doesn't matter how great WCC is.
Take a look at Arizona, they found a good interim solution in Kevin O'Neill. You can argue that this happened at the start of the season but frankly nobody expected lute olsen to be absent for an entire season, so that shows you it can be done but it has to be done in the right way.
Finally, the turnaround that you talk about, if it didn't happen under lawton, it will happen under the next president, whoever he is. I like lawton as the president though, just for the record.

so how do you want him to handle it? He can either admit, deny or ignore. He tried to ignore but the press just won't let him off the hook so he denied. He is a hall of famer, he is not about to let a personal trainer ruin his reputation. Let's say, even if he handles this situation the right way, how is it going to help his reputation? It's basically just damage control, there is nothing "good" about it.

It could be good publicity for USF but could hamper establishing a good future for their program. Yeah ESPN has name dropped USF but this could be a big setback. Too early to tell.
