I've got a good feeling about Monty and Dunlap. I agree ironlions, I think we should have one of those big names wrapped up in 2 weeks. I'm getting a little excited. ;D

I only see two directions that Husak can take with this hire.
1. Get a former D1 Head Coach with some baggage that has been fired from a recent job. Ben Braun, Nolan Richardson, Bill Bayno, Eric Musselman, Brad Soderberg. A coach with no baggage like Monty has to many options besides LMU. I just cant see him coming here, but please prove me wrong.
2. The second direction is an Assistant Coach in the Pac 10 or the NBA with west coast ties like a Gib Arnold, Donnie Daniels or Mike Dunlap. All though I like Dunlap as an Alum, what has he achieved. He won a couple National Championships at DII Metro State. Guess what, so did Paul Westphal at Grand Canyon and he was a real winner. Westphal destroyed both the Seattle Sonics and Pepperdine. I totaly agree with titanczar, the Big west is where coaches go to die. We dont want to have anything to do with those guys.
The third option which won't happen is getting an up and coming Head Coach at a samller school like Howland when he was at NAU. Are Athletic Department hasnt shown any skill in identifying talent and it won't happen now.
Would I be happy with any of the above names beside Monty, of course not.

I think that the dailynews article explains some of the arrows in our quiver to getting Monty. It's not a slam dunk but Monty isn't a spring chicken he may like the idea of setting up a springboard for his son in Los Angeles.
Dunlap did a major rehaul job on Metro State. I do not know what condition Grand Canyon was in but Dunlap's lifetime coaching record is impressive but it is true that is not on the D1 level.

Monty or bust.... If Husak cannot persuade Monty, a personal friend of his, then it is clear Husak cannot sale anything. Husak needs to beg Lawton and Bove for an extra $200k loan for the first year (to pay Monty a respectable $500k). That extra $200k will be repaid at the end of the season with increased ticket sales. Pressures on Husak, Bove, and Lawton to get this deal done. I want Mike and John back on campus. Dunlap is a decent runner-up, but no D1 coaching experience. Holland was not good enough for San Diego, so why would he be good enough for LMU? All other candidates listed should not be candidates. If we go with anyone else other than Monty or Dunlop, we might as well give Bo Kimble the keys to our o'd dusty basketball kingdom. I have more faith in Bo's passion to move this program forward than a Pac-10 assistant coach or a Big West head coach.

Everyone loves Monty but we can't get our hopes up too much. The man is wanted by a lot of people and a lot with fat wallets. At his age he probably doesn't just care about money but it doesn't hurt one bit! We will never have the sort of money to compete with major programs. I read he still has a million coming in from Golden State. I hope Monty comes but I also realize that we may not be seeing his Benz parked next to Husak's Toyota anytime soon. Just stay away from the BW coaches unless we want to go back into hibernation.

When I was an undergrad at LMU during the coaching search that brough in Aggers, Dunlap's named was mentioned. Dunlap was at Metro State at the time, and I actually emailed him to see if he was interested. (I had a lot of time on my hands as a student.) He graciously replied to my email and said he was flattered about being considered for the position. Seems like a genuinely nice guy, and I wouldn't be upset if he was given the job. Just so you know, I have quit emailing perspective coaching candidates.

Bankman, If there are bankman44s out there contacting candidates......you may want to try your angle with Monty's son, John, at 864-294-3438 (office telephone at Furman) or if e-mail is your game then john.montgomery1577@furman.eduCome on bankman...I know you want to redeem your self and land a coach this time.

Whoa there buddy. First you started a email, snail mail, telethon to get Tention out and now you are encouraging a new wave of activist cyber thuggery to get new coach in. You best be careful you don't get a citation on of these days. Anyone else pissed off at the Loyolan? I just got a !!BREAKING NEWS!! email from them minutes ago claiming "BREAKING NEWS: Former Stanford Coa...." So of course I get up and do a 2 minute long happy dance thinking that blessings had rained down upon West LA and Mike Montgomery had signed on as our new head coach defying all logic and putting LMU on the path to glory. But no, upon clicking on the link I see this breaking news is from just a copy and paste of the Daily News article. Loyolan, please go with "NOT SO BREAKING: Latest rumors I've just now read in the newspaper." next time. I do not advocate contacting any one, but the LMU Administration (Lawton, Bove, Husak). LMU needs to get this right. I just thought I would tempt bankman44 to redeem himself. Robert Lawton, S.J. Bankman, Hey, I did write some articles for The Loyolan, so I did consider myself part of the media when I contacted Dunlap trying to get an early rumor. Not a ultimate fan crazy student, that was bored at his computer because basketball season was over. I don't recommend any of us contacting coaching candidates unless you want to portray yourself as an SEC football nut that thinks there is a chance that Bill Cowher is going to take the head job at your school. Unless you a big time booster at LMU, (which we have none), our Athletic Department ain't listening to anybody. Lawton needs to know that Husaks job should be on the line with this hire. Somebody start a perspective AD thread. All throw some names in there. Bankman,

Cal is also after Dunlap who has very nice things to say about the Bears and leaving Denver. I like what Dunlap has to say, sounds like he would not be satisfied with status quo and only wants to go somewhere committed to winning. If he does come to LMU I think we could rest easy that the administration would support the program 100% because Dunlap wouldn't stand by if they didn't. Dunlap, 50, joined the Nuggets after a historic nine-year run at Metro State College (Denver), where he went 248-50 and won two Division II championships. He was named NABC Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002, the championship years, and went to the national semifinals in 1999 and 2004.
"Yeah, I'd be interested in (the Cal job)," Dunlap said. "I don't know a whole lot about it; I don't know particulars about the process. I think a lot of people would be interested in Cal."
Dunlap was a finalist for the USF job in 2004, but he was specific about what it would take to beat perennial West Coast Conference winner, Gonzaga, and was denied the budget for assistant coaches and recruiting, according to a source. He walked out of the final meeting within 30 minutes.
"If it's the right situation, yeah, college fits my profile to a T," Dunlap said. "I've been well-traveled as a coach, many college stops, professionally in Australia, etc. But, yes, it fits, getting back to the college game at some point."
Dunlap and Bennett have moved ahead of previous frontrunners Randy Bennett and Mike Montgomery, sources said. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/28/SP4TVSP0J.DTLIt's starting to get hot out there.

Bone is a helluva coach. He has the exact profile that Aggers had at EWU..built a previously dead program in the Big Sky Conference.
Honestly, his Portland State team and the returning talent is much better than LMU now. I don't see him doing this move because I'm not sure it's much of a jump.
I would not be surprised to see Bone get the job at Oregon State.
Dunlap saying no is not a surprise. They took their swing with him three years ago but he was too smart to come to LMU w/ Husak running things. I still think he winds up at Cal.
I'm still trying to reconcile why Montgomery would take the LMU job even as much as he loves his son. A lot of downside for him personally.
We'll see how Husak does. I'm not a fan of the A.D., but Bone would be a good hire.

Looks like our chances at the celebrity/big time coaches are narrowing. If Bone is given an offer he'll jump for it. PSU is in a low major conference and it isn't likely he will use it as a stepping stone for the majors. A mid like LMU is his best chance now. He hasn't been at portland long but has done ok. The article talks like he is a front runner.
