Meaning these are the 5 that should be interviewed:
1) Wyking Jones- the man bleeds Crimson and Navy, has a national championship ring, strong Nike recruiting ties, and is an alumni. Wyk deserves to be a finalist.
2) Russell Turner- our inept AD passed up on him twice, choosing a flop and a drunk. Turner has led Irvine to a conference championship, is out-recruiting mid-majors, and has posted back to back 20 win seasons. The only thing missing from his resume is Irvine first-ever tourney invite, which may or may not happen this week. Sadly, Turner may be looking at Pac-10 offers and as bad as he wanted the LMU job for years may say no thanks.
3) Jamion Christian- in second year just led his alma mater to the NCAAs as a big dog. Made a deep run in his 1st year turning around a floundering program. Is known as a ferocious player development expert and has been a part of teams making deep runs (VCU). May take some money to pry him from his beloved Mount, but with his coaching ability he won't be there forever.
4) Mike Dunlap- another perennial finalist for the job and an LMU alum. Has experience all over the map from D2 to NBA to interim titles in Pac-10 and Big East. He deserves an interview and is rumored to be the frontrunner, but I fail to see the huge appeal.
5) Justin Hutson- Recruting and defense are two areas we need to key on. It would be nice to hire a youngish coach who can grow the program. Hutson has strong west coach ties and is part of one of the leading mid-major programs in the country. Likely he would jump at the chance for his first head coaching gig at a school rife with opportunity for improvement.
I left out Ben Howland even though he's been in the LMU mix a few times. I don't feel it is the right fit and think he would move on rather quickly at the first opportunity.
Others considered: Ali Ton (Irvine assistant), Bruce Pearl (lol, Bayno-redux), Corey Gaines, Tommy Lloyd (zags), Jason Williford (UVA)
