In my opinion, I think Dunlap's calling card to being competitive in WCC play will be how the defense is constructed. I've been fiddling with thinking about Dunlap and his 1-3-1 on D. I'm not a coach so I might be off. However, I imagine that currently as constructed it's something like this:
Ayodeji Egbeyemi at the top to put pressure on the ball and guard the PG area on the floor. Backing him up might be Chase Flint who can use his long arms and willingness to hustle.
In the middle near the FT line will be Gabe Levin. He's tall at 6'7" and has active arms and hands. He'll also move to close out on the perimeter and is smart and can QB the defense from the middle. Backing him up might be Godwin Okonji who also has long arms and can disrupt things defensively. Plus it keeps him out of the "last" defense position and keep him out of foul trouble.
The goalie or rim protector will be Patson Siame because of his obvious size and that's probably what he can do right now, as opposed to play the important position in the middle of the 1-3-1. I'd say that Marin Mornar if he is still around could back him up because of his leaping, mobility and willingness to contest shots.
On one side of the floor we'll have Simon Kracjocvic probably backed-up by Humphries (probably the least of the guard defenders) guarding maybe their weakest wing scorer. On the other end, we'll probably have Evan Payne backed-up by another guard that we don't know about yet.
At first I was concerned about losing a Nick Stover and CJ Blackwell due to their length and size, in this type of arrangement, I think that defensively it will come together. Of course, a huge key will be Egbeyemi and staying healthy to be a defender at the top, and whether or not Siame comes to play that last defender role. However, I really like the idea of Egbeyemi, Payne and Levin being used to stop penetration and whomever is the other team's best guy.
Hopefully they can recruit another athletic wing and another forward who can play Levin's role on D to a certain extent and yet who's not a liability on the floor.
