This is exciting! Came across this news posted today on collegebasketballtalk.com. collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/03/report-st-johns-center-chris-obekpa-to-transfer/Dunlap would have been on the staff that recruited Obekpa his senior year of high school, so they must know each other. It's almost a six-degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon connection, with Dunlap recruiting him, and Obekpa having been part of "Basketball without Borders" while in Nigeria... Here was his St. John's bio entering this past year...check out his high school numbers: www.redstormsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/chris_obekpa_822295.htmlThis season, he averaged a block every 6 1/2 minutes (ie play 20 minutes, 3 blocks) and a rebound every four minutes. He had four games with at least 7 blocks. Not an offensive threat, but an amazing defensive presence. St. John's stat package is all inclusive, search by name, his bio and stats are on page 9. grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/stjo/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/2013-14/misc_non_event/PlayerProfiles.pdfLastly, here is a story I found from June 2012, after St. John's signed Obekpa. The second note mentions how Obekpa will solidify "Dunlap's patented match up zone" defense. newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/06/12/rothstein-files-5-things-chris-obekpas-commitment-means-to-st-johns/Am I missing something, or does this seem like a potential match?

A freaking 7' 4.5" wingspan! www.draftexpress.com/profile/Chris-Obekpa-7086/That link has a chart showing his blocks per 40 minutes compared to other elite shotblockers. I don't really care about his offensive limitations, if he can pull his rebounding together this guy would be a defensive terror in the WCC.

I like the Block-Per-40 list...three of those five other players were selected in the Top Six of their NBA Drafts!
Obviously, Obekpa's offense may preclude that type of draft status. I did also notice that on uncurselmu's link, Obekpa was the 23rd ranked sophomore, two spots ahead of Gonzaga's Przemek Karnowski.
Let's hope Dunlap and he have a strong relationship from the days when the Red Storm was courting him.

I would say Obekpa is a longshot.
The name that i would keep our eyes on is Max Hooper. He is also transferring from st. johns. Is an immediately eligible graduate senior, is from the california area, and has Dunlap ties. He fits the bill of the shooter we need as he knocked down 6 3's in their last NIT game.

Impressive - Obekpa's extra inch of height and 20 lbs (well placed) gives him a differential from Godwin. Can we really land a third player from Africa to bolster our inside game - Obekpa, Siame and Okonji? Would be nice!
I thought we lost the "Scholl connection?"

I reffed the Colision XVI CIF vs City All Star game today, I saw Elijah, who looked impressive...I told him he broke my heart when he decommited, and said he really had no idea where he was going to go. He said the current staff isn't recruiting him that hard as well, so let's not get our hopes up high.
Of the players who played in the game, I thought Terrell Carter, would be a good fit, especially for WCC play...

Stewart has become a big deal in the recruiting world . He is considered the best prospect available after Myles Turner. Stewart is set to host Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Texas, USC, Cincinnati, Boston College, Virginia and Oklahoma State this coming week. Texas or UNC- should be front runners.

He probably just wanted to avoid some of the awkwardness of having opted out. The current staff should have never been hired if they didn't think he was worth recruiting hard. I'm sure they made a hard play to keep him, saw the writing on the wall when he asked for his release and recognized that he's not worth pursuing heavily if he's looking for greener pastures w/ a major program. After reading the long list of school's provided above I have to also think it's kind of Dickish for elijah to make that comment. Maybe I'm reading too much into this and the further context of the comment shows something different, but it seems like his ego may be showing a bit as he asked for a release, now has a dozen major programs begging for his services and he's going to act as though the level of our current recruiting of him means a damn thing right now.

Is it just me or is anyone else SO OVER the Elijah Stewart stuff? Are we going to post his stats for every game wherever he ends up? Give the new staff a chance and lets stop focusing on what "could have been". Recruiting news coming up soon. I am hoping Gorski, but dont be surprised if other international prospects come into play.
