Tough loss but very well played, don't know why Herman didn't play, and in hindsight maybe Markusson could've played more. We fought hard and for the most part were very aggressive. Amayo is a stud, hopefully we can keep improving and win some of these close games going forward.
I thought we picked up where we left off in the Nevada game, hopefully the full week off gives us an opportunity to fine tune some things and come back stronger.

Lions 30 for 30...what if I told you that LMU has a coach that has assembled a team of athletic perimeter players with different skills, but at the same time plays undisciplined and lacks the ability to rebound or run a play in crucial times? You'd think I met Max Good, but oddly enough we have the same thing in Dunlap.
Anyhow, I'll take back what I say about Dunlap. Rather than being a negative on the program, he's simply a 0. For his efforts to be the opposite of Max Good, the teams are strikingly similar. Same level of talent (although we have yet to see if Manuel can match his Oregon 4 star counter part in Viney) and same technical game, and same lack of fundamentals. Dunlap couldn't draw a play to get the pea in the ocean coming out of a timeout..that is obviously a glaring weakness is coaching repertoire. Many times we've seen his teams freeze up or lack the ability to get up a shot when its crunch time. He also has a penchant for yelling at his own players for some reason during important moments and ruining their confidence.
I'm disappointed in the play of big center from Hawaii. And before you think I'm being unfair, these aren't kids on the team. Brown and Amayo are young adults (the same age i started my professional career), and the center is a man too. Amayo is playing really well, but I find it sad that he has become our best player already. But Brown and Jovanavic (sp) still make bad mistakes that they shouldnt be making anymore. The team has some size but they are not athletic, and only Johnson can bruise around but he's short. Herman (another young adult) never made the strides so we should leave that one off our wish list.
The good news, is that these guys are so wild and out there, along with being athletic, that they are going to hang in games because it gets ugly. McClendon is a great recruit for Dunlap basketball, he basically almost took out the knees of every Husky out there. They also run up and down the court and commit many fouls (nobody knows how to draw a charge) and that slows the game down too.
For myself, I see the program basically stalled because Dunlap is just another placeholder on a long list of guys who want to revive the program but are their own worst enemy. The worry though is that if Pacific or Portland or Santa Clara starts to take off, that we'll really struggle because this team is way behind BYU, Gonzaga and St. Mary's. 5 years after out 20 win season and we're still going backwards.
and yes, this was connecticut. but watching the game you know that any of the top 3 WCC teams would have won. I love Kevin Ollie and his story (know some people who knew him at Crenshaw) but I'm not sure what happened to his program. Very rocky, maybe they'll pick it up in Maui.
Edit*
before someone says im overreacting to a loss to UConn, I dont think the sky is falling. We would have been expected to lose is any ordinary circumstances. However, this still would have been a decent win in Dunlap's pocket, but the same errors keep popping up his 3rd year into coaching here. LMU should hang around the middle of the pack, but that would be disappointing giving the head start he has on everyone else. These are the ones he should be winning by now. Good wasn't relieved of his duties just to be in the same or worst spot, it was to make a big jump. the administration didn't go for a young up and comer because presumably they thought Dunlap deserved it as an alum and his supposed recruiting abilities. It's really just a meh at this point.

Pretty impressive given our tallest player on the floor was 6'5"/6'6" on the floor for 80% of the game. Amaya a great find. Wish we could have had Markusson in there for rebounds in the second half.

I'm disappointed the Lions have' learned to get over the hump yet but I see Ateam hat was better than it was 3 days ago against a better Power 5 opponent. But, by my memory, November and early December are when developing new teams learn to win.

I dont want to hear about moral victories. Or how its awesome we kept Uconn close. This Uconn team was terrible, unfortunately we were more terrible. Couldnt beat Northeastern or Wagner.. and beat us. We expect to win how many games this year? Sad part is the team is full of seniors. Who do we have to look forward to next year? Its still early in the year, but realistically speaking.. i dont see moral victories.. i see a missed opportunity against a name program who is really really bad this year. How many Ft's are we planning on missing down the stretch? This game made me sick.

Nice game. Poor rebounding and free throw shooting lost it for us. I look for the Lions to have a solid year based on what I have seen. With our depth, we should be able to create mismatches and wear teams down. My prediction is we will go 2-4 and against the top 3 of the WCC and we will finish in 4th or 5th place. Clearly, tonight's game plan didn't call for the Lions bigs to play much. That both helped and hurt us. The lack of playing time for the bigs should motivate them to rebound if nothing else. I haven't given up on Jocovic but, so far, am underwhelmed by his play. Too early to make draw any definitive conclusions. I am concerned that our four best players (so far) are all seniors. That would be Brown, Amayo, Shamar, and Tauch. We really are going to need a point guard next year. McClendon is great. He wreaks havoc on the opponent and take them out of their game. A unique weapon.

I still think going 1-5 vs the top 3 would be great, they are just so much better. Too early to talk next year, but it's looking like it will be Tutu, McClendon, Haney, Manuel, and Markusson starting. Our depth will rely on Herman + freshman and sophomores. So far Dunlap has proven his ability to recruit Juco/transfers that have had big impacts, we will most likely need one next year. But back to this year, hopefully we keep up the steady improvement. Obviously how good Uconn is is TBD given their first two games, but watching tonight's game I saw an LMU team that looked decent and can compete.

This was a lost opportunity to beat a "name" program, but let's also remember that the guy who will probably end up being our best player, Manuel, did not play. This would have been like us beating teams last year without Jacko.
A few made free throws, and one or two key defensive rebounds down the stretch, and the outcome most likely would have been different.

This was a much better game than the Nevada contest. It was winnable but some unfortunate turnovers late cost us - not unlike the Clippers latest contest this week - which can happen to the best teams. Amayo is an awesome player, a virtual freight train driving to the hoop. Interesting that he seemed to just fall into the Lions lap late in the preseason as our best recruit in recent years. We were all up about our bigs, who played virtually no role in the UConn game. I'm not sure what Jovanovic did wrong - something he did or didn't do - but I thought he started the game on the right foot scoring 4 early points. He played only 6 minutes and Markusson 7. Herman zero. Our small lineup worked well however creating havoc with our aggressive zone defense. It helped that UConn seems to lack a point guard, which doesn't bode well for them this season. Johansson got some minutes but seems shy about shooting the ball when open - probably his youth and lack of experience at this level. An entertaining game with the Gersten crowd on their feet for the last 90 seconds of the contest. Great atmosphere and a nice step forward for the Lions.
