***Women's Basketball 07-08 Season Thread***

The successful 06-07 season saw the lions advance to the WCC Championships and sweep crosstown rival Pepperdine 3-0.

Now it's time to prepare for an even better season that'll lead the lions to the NCAAs.

Meet the new lions.

Taylor Shead, 5-10, Guard. Plano West High School, TX
PR: As a senior, she averaged 11.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 3.2 assists per game. She helped her team reach the regional semifinals, serving as team captain. Shead earned first team All-District 5A honors and is a member of the National Honor Society. As a junior, she helped lead her team to the Texas 5A State Championship.

Lauren Wilkins, 6-1, Forward. Jesuit High School Portland, ORE
PR: Wilkins earned first team All-State and first team All-State Tournament honors . She was named Metro League Player of the Year and helped her team finish second in the state. This season, she averaged 12.5 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.2 steals per game. A three-sport athlete, she was also a first-team All-State selection in soccer and was named the Metro League Player of the Year.

Renahy Young, 5-8, Guard. Redondo Union High School, CA
PR: An All-American this season after earning Cal Hi Sports All-State honors last year. As a junior, she earned second team All-CIF honors and first team All-Bay League honors after averaging 14 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds per game. Young had an outstanding summer with her club team, Swish, helping them win the Oregon Trail Tournament. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the Oregon Trail Tournament, as well as the River City Classic Tournament and the Nike Nationals.

Melanie Ysaguirre, 6-0, Forward. Troy High School, Fullerton CA.
PR: Street & Smith Preseason All-American this season after helping her team to a state championship two out of the last three years. As a junior, Ysaguirre was a first team All-Freeway League selection after averaging 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists per game. She teamed with Young on the Swish team that won the Oregon Trail Tournament in the summer of 2006.

Shead seeks fun in the sun at Loyola Marymount

Plano West senior Taylor Shead knew she wanted two things out of her college experience other than an opportunity to play basketball and get a quality education.

“She wanted to go to a school in a warm state with a beach,” said Ken Shead, Taylor’s father.

After visiting Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif., her mind was pretty much made up.

Shead stayed on campus with two of freshmen from the Lady Lions basketball team and enjoyed the surroundings that the city of Los Angeles has to offer. She was able to hike in the mountains and even spent a little time with her future teammates on the beach.

“You know the scene from “The Mighty Ducks,” where they are all roasting marshmallows,” Shead said. “That’s what it was like. I was sitting on the beach with the basketball team making smores. I had this feeling like I was moving forward.”

All she needed was a rendition of Queen’s “We are the Champions,” being played on a guitar. After helping West to the Class 5A State Title her junior year, Shead continued to play an important role as a team captain in the Lady Wolves’ core group this season. This year, West went to the regional semifinals, and won another district title.

Now, the former Lady Wolves’ guard will take the large step from high school to the college ranks, where the level of education as well as athletics will [rise]. Fortunately for Shead, she earned first team all-district honors at West, and is a member of National Honor Society.

Shead is leaning towards pre-med, but still has the option of pre-law. While she weighs her options, she will be able to play for the Lady Lions at LMU, which was a successful basketball program last season.

The team welcomed her when she came as a recruit on her first visit, and LMU Head Coach Julie Wilholt sees an excellent opportunity to add an athletic and intelligent student to her squad.

Lauren Wilkins will join the Lions in the fall of 2007.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU women's basketball head coach Julie Wilhoit announced today that Lauren Wilkins, a forward from Portland, Ore., has signed a letter of intent to join the Lions in the fall of 2007. She is the fourth player to sign for next fall, joining Renahy Young, Melanie Ysaguirre and Taylor Shead.

"We are very excited to sign Lauren Wilkins to a National Letter of Intent to play basketball here at LMU. Lauren is a three sport athlete who has excelled on and off the court. Her athletic ability is only one aspect of why she will be a natural fit into our program at LMU. She is a remarkable leader within the Jesuit High School Community and an outstanding scholar. We are thrilled that Lauren has chosen to continue her athletic and academic development in our women's basketball program and at LMU," said Wilhoit.

Wilkins earned first team All-State and first team All-State Tournament honors at Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore. The 6-1 forward was named Metro League Player of the Year and helped her team finish second in the state.
