Yikes, lions first game of the renewed Holiday Tournament was a grueling one. 2OT 95-90 victory over a fiesty Bakersfield. One of the longest WBBALL games in recent history in Gersten. I really hope the ladies can rest up for the championship game tomorrow. Go lions!

LIONS WIN!!! It's nice to talk about winning after spending a week stewing in agony.
LMU extends the win streak over the Portland Pilots to 9 with our 73-71 nailbitting victory at Portland. Lions dropped a huge lead (13) in the game but rallied back thanks to standout freshman Young. Go lions!

Candice Nichols mid-season transfer from Washington State will join us in 2009. She was previously ranked (2007) #83 top recruit in nation by HoopsGurlz. This is one of LMU's best recruiting classes in recent history if not ever. 2 top 100 recruits and another 2 talented local players Next season should be very interesting. lmulions.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/011508aaa.html

I was happy about this announcement until I read:
"A 5-10 guard from Carson, CA, Nichols did not appear in any games for Washington"
Huh? How could that be? 2 years sitting on the bench?

Candace is listed at a four star recruit. With Alex and Candace that is two four star recruits in one class. I believe she was only at UW for one year. I checked their roster and they have 7 guards, perhaps the reason she didn't have any run. In any case, I'm happy she is a Lion! With this new up tempo offense and a influx of talented recruits we are looking great!
Go Lions!

Some more info on Candice:
Her lack of PT seems to be becasue of a coaching change a UW.
"Candice said she was being unfairly treated. Nothing she did was right. If she pulled up for a jump shot, it was never the right time," Murray said. "I tried to convince her to stick it out for a year. I was telling Candice that Tia was trying to do it (make her mentally tougher) for her own good. Candice lost confidence in herself. She was in the doghouse in practice and had handcuffs in games."

Alex Cowling article! www.timesheraldonline.com/sports/ci_8108497 Alex Cowling is still many months away from making her college debut, but St. Patrick-St. Vincent High's loss will certainly be Loyola Marymount's gain.
The St. Pat's senior signed her letter of intent to play basketball for the West Coast Conference school in November, putting to rest months - if not years - of speculation.
College scouts had been following Cowling's progress since her freshman year, and the attention only increased as her point totals ballooned. Known as one of the best players in Northern California before her junior season began, Cowling received more recognition after the Bruins' impressive playoff run, ending with a loss to Marlborough in the Division IV state championship game.
"I spoke to several college head coaches about Alex," said St. Pat's coach Rod Faucett. "Everybody knew she was a prodigy, and we were pretty patient in the process. Both her parents were pretty high-profile athletes in college, so it wasn't that intense a process. I just wanted her to have fun playing, and wanted to get the best out of her."
Loyola Marymount was one of the first schools to court Cowling, and she rewarded their faith in her when it came time to decide on a college program.
"In the beginning Loyola Marymount started recruiting me heavily, and they saw early on what other teams hadn't seen," Cowling said. "Their coaching staff is great, too, and I could tell early on they were great people. They're really up front with me, telling me what's real, and I really respect that."
Cowling is focused on St. Pat's when she's on the court, and eclipsed the 30-point mark three times over the past week, leading the Bruins to victories over Salesian, Piedmont and St. Mary's. However, she admits thinking about the future in her spare time, failing to stifle a grin that demonstrates her excitement about playing for the Lions next season.
Possessing a rare mix of physicality and rebounding ability with superior court vision and an accurate shot, Cowling has been a force for the Bruins this season. But at 5-foot-10, she knows she'll have to play more of a perimeter game at the college level.
"I'm not a post, and I realize that, but I love playing anywhere on the court," Cowling said. "I'd really like to play the 3 because I can mix it up. I can either go down and rebound or I can stay outside."
St. Pat's is anticipating another lengthy playoff run this season, and Cowling will be right in the thick of it. One of the most talented and entertaining players to star for the Bruins, she'll be missed by a supportive coach who's helped her develop into a star player.
"She's going to Loyola Marymount and I expect she'll be a perimeter player and she'll have an immediate impact as a freshman," Faucett said, noting Cowling, like each of his players past and present, are always welcome. "I look at our basketball program as a family. I look at all of these girls as my daughters ... and they're always welcome in our environment. Our environment and philosophy doesn't change over the years."
The St. Pat's program might not change, but the players who pass through it certainly do. Cowling is living proof of that.

Congrats LMU for completing the weekend sweep of Gonzaga and Portland.
It's interesting to read the press releases about the women's team. It seems that only in the past 5 or so seasons has the program become very competitive. Wilhoit mentioned after the last thrashing of Pepperdine that it was when the department began to fund the program competitively it allowed her to recruit well and get the staff she needed and the wins came in.
Glad we've discovered the secret ingredients for the women! Next season things look very bright as well. Go lions!
