Wow, this is great news! Not only are his overall numbers for his freshman season impressive, over his last seven games he averaged 13 points, 9.4 rebounds, and was 15 of 31 (48%) from three-point range! He had three double-doubles, as someone else had posted earlier (thank you for doing that), but taking a closer look he had nine points in two other games in which he had double digit rebounds (so almost five double-doubles). That said, only four LMU players in history had at least four double-doubles as a freshman (I know Alex had his 3 at CSUN, but just for comparison sake)...Johnny Brown in the early 80s, who unfortunately transferred to New Mexico and had an excellent college career; Kevin Young, who transferred and played in the NCAA championship game with Kansas; Gabe Levin, who transferred after Dunlap came in and played at Long Beach; and a player by the name of Eli Scott. In other words, players who perform this well in Division I as freshmen are pretty special. Welcome aboard, Alex! www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/alex-merkviladze-1/gamelog/2021/

For no other reason than I thought it would be an interesting data point, I wanted to compare Alex's frosh stats with Tanner Groves.
As a freshman, Tanner played 28 game, averaged 8.3 minutes per game, shot 41.7% from the field, 38.5% from 3, shot 65% from the line, averaged 2.1 rebounds.
In his freshman year, Alex played 22 games, averaged 28.4 minutes per game, shot 43.9% from the field, 38.2% from 3, shot 61.9% from the line, averaged 7.0 rebounds.
Allowing for the disparity in minutes played, stats are very similar. Over the next 2 years, Tanner might big jumps in field goal percentage and free throw percentage. Let's hope Alex grows at a similar pace.

Just read that Alex will have 4 years of eligibility with the Lions because of COVID. Good news.
