Sounds like Tyrone Riley has a final 3 and LMU isn’t on the list (he will make his announcement tomorrow); which leaves Seven Bahati and Kany Tchanda as our final 2 open offers for 2024 according to Verbal Commits. Both are playing for Sunrise Christian out in Kansas.
Coach has said in several interviews going forward his plan is to hit the portal hard each year and only bring in one or two high school players.

I think for LMU that’s the only way to build. Not a lot of HS talent is coming to a school like LMU. Imagine if you were a pro team only building from the draft. Those teams rarely become anything! It’s better to find already established talent, have a decent team, then attract the top talent.

Not sure I particularly agree with Dedicatedlion but the whole building rosters thing has completely changed since transfer rules were changed. Just a couple years ago wise coaches would build rosters with a few new freshmen every year. They’d resort to the transfer portal only to fill in unexpected gaps.
That no longer works because so many players hit the portal each year. Not only are odds high that a coach will lose a key future component(a) to his planned roster; but let’s face it, quality high school kids are hard to come by. And most leagues and cities have a hard time mounting the competition level needed to prove individual player’s ability to play quality DI ball. For example, look at the high achieving LA City players we’ve seen at LMU. How well have they performed?? … Not very! I think Coach Stan is right to rely heavily on the transfer portal where he can find players who have already proven themselves playing DI ball.

Returning players on our roster next year:
PG: Will Johnston SG: Dominick Harris/Noah Taitz SF: Lamaj Lewis/Jovan Ristic PF: Aaron McBride C: Nobody
Maybe we have some seniors - like Wright, Merkviladze, or Graham who could have an extra year i am not aware of, but until we have 3-4 years of bringing in about 2 good freshman per year, we are going to need 4-5 good transfers each year if we want to remain competitive

Good observations but Coach will work it out somehow. Who expected Issanza or Thieman?

And the first effect of Romar on the staff; just flipped #22 in the state forward Jael Martin, 6’8’ 190 lbs from Carlsbad who had originally signed with Pepperdine. Averaged 12.8ppg, 6.9rpg, and 2apg in his senior year.

Has anyone seen this kid play? Carlsbad had a strong team this year and it looks like Martin was their #2 guy. He’s classified as a PF, but he’s undersized for that role. He’s a perfect size for the 3-spot … if he has the skill set. One source listed him as a 3/4 swing guy. I hope he has the skill set.

They had some full games shown on youtube. Looks like he is going to have to adjust to the physicality before being able to contribute (if he is a PF will need to see more tenacity on the boards, 7 rpg at his size and athleticism is not ideal). But seems like a really great prospect and awesome signing for us.

His shot needs a lot of work. Really low and slow release. High level athlete but needs a lot of polishing from what I saw. I see him in McBrides body mold but McBride being farther along than him

Between the star freshman we see on TV who get drafted and all the transfers now, I think people forget that - at the mid major level - Freshman usually don't play. Maybe as a sophomore they crack the rotation, start as a junior, and can be an all conference type player as a senior. Anyone who follows that trajectory would be an incredible recruit (such as Keli). Problem is kids now sit a year and want to transfer, and coaches go out and recruit grad transfers that don't necessarily allow for players who return to move up the depth chart (which is why i don't blame someone for transferring if they are looking at 2+ years of sitting on the bench). Regardless, Jael has potential but it is going to take 2-3 years before we see it - hopefully we are patient with him and he sticks with the program.

Travis Branham from 247sports reports Jase Butler has decommited from Illinois. We were final 6 last time; curious how this is going to play out.
