Bad ending but man, this team is way more fluid and exciting than last year.
Feel for the guys tonight, but no time to feel sorry for ourselves. Regroup and prove it on Saturday.
Decent atmosphere in Gersten tonight, a lot of students….just needed some excitement to actually get them going.

Hopefully we take this as a teaching moment and grow from it. Having a quick turnaround on Saturday might be the best thing for us to get back on the court and hopefully post a W.
Interior defense in the second half was woeful. Mix in a zone defense every now and then, do something to throw them off.
That said, tough to win when you lose both of your interior defenders, Leaupepe, and Douglas is still in street clothes. Regardless, need to figure out a way to hold on to a 20-point lead.
Hopefully we grow from this. Go Lions.

Decent atmosphere in Gersten tonight, a lot of students….just needed some excitement to actually get them going. Decent atmosphere? Frankly, our student section sucks. Literally wouldn't matter if Gersten were full of students, it'll still be quiet as a library. Students these days are "TOO COOL" to cheer. Very "LA" of them. I hate it. The school should pay iggy or the cowbell guy or SOMEONE to try to bring some life into these 18-22 year olds, because there are clearly no students who want to take any initiative. Nevertheless, this doesn't excuse what happened on the court tonight. This is a horrid loss. Blowing an 18 point lead at half to a subpar Big West school. Sorry, no other way to look at it other than the players need to be better (Keli CANNOT foul out after 18 mins as our SR leader) and the coaching staff couldn't draw anything up to get guys free. Chance is on the court to do one thing. SHOOT 3s. He played 13 mins and we were unable to get him free ONCE.

No doubt, this was a bad loss. No way a team should lose with an 18-point halftime advantage, especially against a mediocre team. I’ve gotta’ pin this one on the Coach. He made no adjustments at halftime while the UCR coach did. It didn’t take long in the second half to see that something needed to be done, but Coach had nothing. Call a timeout, change up the pace of the game. Do SOMETHING! instead he let the players play thru it … and it was obvious that they were failing miserably at that.
I had a 12 year old with me tonight and she commented during warm ups that the Lions were a lot faster. Yet, who showed the hustle in the game? Coach really needed to do something to break lose our shooters, and he did nothing. It’s not that hard to design a few plays to spring open shooters.
As far as players go - Shelton had a very strong game. What he did tonight is what I had been expecting from him since LAST November.
Alex M had a stellar first half (15 points) but UCR keyed on him in the second half and he only had one more basket late in the game.
Leaupepe also had a strong first half but foul trouble limited his second half effectiveness.
And NOBODY else stood up.
The 2 new bigs were non-contributors. Issanza took a good blow to the face and didn’t play a whole lot (4 mins). Graham had 2 baskets and one rebound. That’s not getting the job done. Also, his defense was terrible. He was late on everything.
Ahrens provides solid leadership but he’s gotta find ways to score. He’s probably the guy you’d expect to step up when he is needed, but it didn’t happen tonight.
Anderson made way too many mistakes.
Lewis always seem to be just short of the goal - a couple inches here, a couple inches there, and he’d be effective. But instead he’s not really much of a factor.
Stevens looks like a young school kid trying to play a big boy game. He never came close to getting a good look.
Team interior defense was terrible. They need to fill the gaps, react quicker and play smarter. The inside guys were always behind … and typically getting called for fouling because they were responding late.
Lions were out-rebounded 37-29 … by an inferior team.
I sure hope the team and Coach gets their act together by Saturday.

I thought crowd enthusiasm was actually pretty good. It created an exciting atmosphere late in the game. But if they don’t play to win, the crowd will disappear quick.

First time comment here. As someone who has a family member attending UCR and colleagues who went there, I was hoping I could brag after tonight's game. Should've known better. I don't have much expectations for this season beyond performing better than last year. LMU needs to win these close games. We clearly were the more talented team, but fainted when it mattered most. Coach Stan is getting paid the big bucks, he needs to prove he can adjust and get better results. On to the next!

Commenters have identified our problems - lack of interior defense and no offensive schemes to open up our shooters. Two strange calls - that “over and back” on a nice steal and a “flop” call that gave UCR a free throw, but those didn’t cause the loss. In retrospect, the halftime show might have been last night’s highlight. And I give credit to UCR for a great comeback and win after a demoralizing first half for them.

Agreed, it was a solid crowd for a week night against a middle of the road opponent. Even if they weren’t raucous until the end, it’s nice that they are there and not just a bunch of empty seats a la Dunlap/Tension era. The game was obviously a brutal ending but I feel the student body this year has been “hankering” for a good team. Would love it if the Lions could start reeling off some wins!
