Pepperdine Waves – Part II
The Lions beat the Waves Jan 28 84-70 in Gersten. The Lions led 48-40 at the half. Everything was clicking forLMU at that time shooting 46% in the first half and 55% in the second. Shelton had 25, Ahrens 18, Stephens 12 (on 4-6 shooting from 3) and Leaupepe had 11. Anderson only played 11 minutes but contributed 5. Pepperdine shot 38% for the game including 29% in the second half. LMU outrebounded the Waves 42-29. Lewis led the Waves with 21 along with Mitchell 13 and Mallette 10. Lamaj played 28 minutes in that game with 6. As I recall, Pepperdine played a disorganized game; now, they seem to be a different team and the talent on their squad is showing up – the Waves beat Portland and BYU earlier this month. They play the Broncos on Thursday before our Saturday game.
Expect a very competitive game. I can’t remember the last time we beat the Waves twice in one season (perhaps someone can help here?)
Gametime: Saturday, Feb 25, 7:30 in Malibu. Video: Bally* Sports SoCal.
*Neither here nor there but I’m reading that Bally is about to go bankrupt and they carried a lot of WCC game this season. Hopefully, the conference finds a way to keep up TV exposure next season.

This team is way more talented than its record. Classic Romar coaching performance, bringing in many top notch players for his band, but can't get them to harmonize. Those who think Stan can't coach Xs and Os should be thankful we don't have our PCH rival for a head coach. Max Lewis is a projected lottery pick, and he's often been overshadowed by fellow sophomores Mallette and Mitchell.

Think the last time we beat Pepperdine twice in the same season was 2011-2012. We snapped an 8 game losing streak in Malibu with a win in 2021 and have won the other two subsequent matches at home (2022 and last month). Would love to make it four in a row on Saturday and lock up the #4 seed for WCC tourney.

In my ideal world Pepperdine fires Romar after the season; Coach Stan hires him as an assistant coach in charge of recruiting; Romar brings a couple of those studs with him to LMU; Romar then does his thing pulling in another couple studs for Stan; Romar then spends all of next season watching and recruiting our 2024 class; and he never gets close to our games. I can at least fantasize a bit.

Lions favored by 2.5 This will be a tough game - the Lions need to be firing on all cylinders! The last game of the day, not starting until 7:30

We need to beat the Waves and/or BYU to beat USF . BYU is at home - that will help. The Cougars are favored by 6. Go Lions! Go Cougars! (Never thought I would be saying that.) Shelton wants to “finish the job” as he said in his interview. So does Coach Johnson.

We win this and we'll have our longest win streak (4) against the Waves in at least a few decades -https://lmulions.com/sports/mens-basketball/opponent-history/pepperdine-university/2

Secret is out. Cam lacks height. Zags, Pacific now Pepperdine is putting athletic length on Cam to keep those easy drives from the basket. Sending a second defender on those 15ft jumpers has been a good move. I’m not an Xs and Os expert, but without Ahrens to space the floor, what’s the solution?

Yeah the secret is out on cam all right... He's pretty good.
