harris tripping over himself to lose the game is the epitome of our season. Physics of falling and replay clearly indicate Howell tripped Harris, inadvertently, but nevertheless, a trip. I hate college basketball.

I hate college basketball. I just watched the replay t. Physics allows people to fall forward over themselves. Harris was already passing Howell when he started falling over himself. Even if Howell inadvertently initiated the trip, it'd still be a foul. We've all seen CSJ argue borderline calls and there was no reaction from him, the staff or Harris following the play.

Lions played a strong game. The way they played tonight is what we were anticipating from the beginning of the season. Probably their best game this season; although I didn’t see the UNLV game. Even nbd shouldn’t be complaining too much.
St Mary’s took 11 more shots than LMU but only made one more basket.
St Mary’s had 7 steals but most of them were more like give aways than steals. Do a better job of protecting the ball and stop making really stupid passes, and we’d have a win.
As it was, it was a one point game with 8 seconds to play. The Lions had the opportunity. They just couldn’t convert. I certainly wanted the win but it was an entertaining game. SMC is challenging for the WCC title this year and our Lions hung with them all game. They deserve credit.
Early in the season I wasn’t seeing much from Johnston but he’s really come into his own recently. NBD is wrong. The guy is a legit DI player. He’s a poor defender (but so was Cam Sheldon last year and he was a candidate for POY). I’ll give nbd that. But he’s a strong shooter and can make his own shot. He’s not a PG even tho he’s been forced into that role. Tonight he had 6 assists to go with his 19 points. Thats pretty good for a non-PG playing PG.
Still way too much standing around on offense. Coach keeps yelling at the guys to move but they seem to be setting up in set positions like the coach has told them to do. The high pick works well against the Gaels but it can’t be our only look.
St Mary’s, despite their size, is vulnerable to an inside game. Last year we watched Cam Sheldon destroy them with his drives. Tonight Coach Stan employed a similar strategy. Unfortunately, our guards this year don’t have Cam’s skill. It was a good strategy tonight but it needed to be used in conjunction with some different sets.
I’d have to study game film to comment on that last trip/fall call. I do know that Dom is amazingly quick but he gets out of control too easily. You really can’t trust him with more than two dribbles. He was certainly out of control on that last drive. He definitely fell. Should there have been a foul called? I dunno. I do know we need him bouncing back and forth from one side to the other while getting screens from our forwards. That will get him the open looks he needs. He’s a great shooter but let’s get him some help!
I’d sure like to see more of Taitz. He had an inbound play designed for him tonight and he sank his shot. I think he’s capable of getting us some points off the bench. I don’t know about his defense. He hasn’t played enough for me to assess that.
Now, can the guys build upon tonight’s experience and play tough for the rest of the season??

Look guys I refrained from making comments throuhgout yesterdays game for several reasons as I ultimately wanted to see the end result before I provided my thoughts. Here are a few takeaways.
1) We lost lets keep it simple. This is a results based business. We took a L in the W/L column
2) Will had a good offensive game yesterday. but true D1 players perform game in and game out in multiple aspects of the game. If your offensive game is off, your defense better support the lack of offense. If your defense is lackluster and your rotations are off for a game or two, then you pick it up on the offensive end and go get yourself some buckets. Will is not just a poor defender, he is a TERRIBLE defender. He can not keep ANYBODY in front of him and is a HUGE liability on defense. This is not an attack on his character but just the reality of his game. In any other top tier D1 program (whether its mid major or power 5) he would be a 3-5 minute per game rotation player that gives relief to the starters.
3) I know I am beating a deadhorse but our coaching again was very lackluster. There is 0 creativity or adjustments on offense or defense. It seems as if CSJ coaches the team up prior to a game and sticks with his game plan whether its working or not. No wonder our players seem confused and are "standing around" . They probably see adjustments and changes on the fly from their opponents but are told to play a certain way so they reluctantly follow whatever our coaching staff tells them to do.
4) I noticed again how subpar our bigs are. Rick and Lars are not great recruits. We have no true post presence and it shows game in and game out.
5) Its unfortunately going to be a longer conference season. Another year of disappointment as a lions fan

In some ways it’s a very simple game, if we had hit 49% of our shots against Santa Clara like we did yesterday against St. Mary’s we would have beat the Broncos.
That’s to say other if we play other teams the way we played against St. Mary’s, the second half of the season will be better than we’ve seen so far. People have pointed out inconsistency with individual players, we need to see consistency from the team, and that hasn’t been the case… hopefully we are turning the corner.
After Thursday’s performance yesterday could’ve been a train wreck, happy for the team that they stepped up.
My one criticism from yesterday was the time out CSJ called after Will hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to 61-60 with just under four minutes remaining. The gym was rocking, two of Saint Mary’s best players weren’t in the game because of foul trouble, and it turned out using that time out there hampered us at the end of the game when we didn’t have one. Bennett was able to sub his two players back in and they immediately took advantage. And then we used two time outs on one possession in the final minute. That time out at 61–60 was a killer.
