So Zags are going to the PAC-12? And Saint Mary's considering the move also? Maybe GCU too.

This whole PAC-X saga is going to be interesting to watch as it unfolds. Without a doubt, the PAC-whatever has a rich heritage and deserved the self-proclaimed “Conference of Champions.” BUT all those championships came from the teams that left the conference. Have either WSU or OSU won any championships?
The conference is doing its best to reel in some schools with quality football and basketball credentials, but how much weight will the conference carry? Division 1 revolves around the money. Do the teams now in the PAC-X have access to the money they’ll need to compete going forward? They want to be on equal footing with the SEC, BIG10 and BIG 12. It’s going to be a struggle.
If you’re the VP of Marketing for Toyota, Pepsi, etc; how interested are you going to be in media rights to Pullman and Spokane, Washington; Fresno, California; Boise, Idaho; and Logan, Utah? The PAC-X couldn’t get a decent media contract when they had access to the LA, Bay Area and Seattle media markets. The only significant media market for the newly formulated PAC-X is San Diego.
Several of the schools in the new conference have impressive home field/ court support. But the only school that travels well is Boise State. And none of the schools have a national following that schools like USC and BYU enjoy. Shoot, I don’t think very many football fans across the country could even find most of the conference’s schools on a map. Many people in the East think Cal, UC Berkeley, as and California are 3 distinct schools! How many football fans across the country are going to have any interest in Fresno State or Utah State football??
Regarding Gonzaga, they deserve all the credit in the world for developing their basketball programs (men and women); but the school is a “one-trick pony.” At some point, that pony will pull up lame. The rest of their athletic programs struggle to even have regional impact. They have a long way to go to achieve a national presence. And being with the likes of CSU, USU and Fresno isn’t going to help. Once Mark Few retires or the player pipeline dries up a bit, Gonzaga can easily fall back into oblivion. Frankly, given the uppity attitude of many of their fans; I think they deserve that fate.
