Marley Zeller had crutches against UCI so I would assume he’s hurt and out a bit. I don’t think Jael Martin was at the UCI game. I would assume he’s sick or hurt.

its amazing the level of mediocrity our fanbase tolerates. This game was also atrocious.
Our coaching is worse than high school pulic school coaching. It is embarassing

It is embarassing Keep in mind most fans are now numb to losing. It’s been now 35 years since lmu has had a very good team… it’s exhausting. And the administration still hasn’t put enough emphasis on winning for anything to change

Fryer - I thought Pintens went big on the basketball program this season. To me it seemed Coach Johnson had resources to get whatever he thought would bring a winning team. If this group fails, it’s likely the coaching at fault as nbd notes. Hoping for a big turnaround but “team” play has been poor so far.

It actually perfectly describes LMU and its fanbase, administration, athletic department. Its a damn shame.

I just want to say thank you LIONS900045 for always being a constant presnce here on the board. After watching the first 3 games of the season very closely, I do indeed believe it is the coaching that is the big issue. Could things turnaround? Sure. Will they? Its anybodys guess. I actually think talent wise we haven't had a more talented, athletic, and solid bunch in quite a long time. The last time that we were this talented IMHO would be during the Drew Viney/Ashley Hamilton days and when I compare this team to back then, we are MUCH MUCH MUCH better. Much longer, much more athletic, with a ton more shooting threats available. Why have Caleb Stone Carawell and Myron Amey been ghosts of their former selves the moment they step into a LMU uniform? Because they are bad players? No. These are young men that need strong and tough leaders that demand the best out of them. It seems to me there is a lack of leadership technique and strategy along with HUGE lacks in basketball IQ from top down. IMHO the talent we have on this roster I actually think is at minimum todays BIG10 level which is why I am so frustrated.

I missed Saturday's game, but I did see the first two. I have no idea how the team will be this year. It's going to take us 10 games to figure out roles and rotations. I'll form my opinion after that. The one glaring weakness I have seen was the lack of a true point guard. We have a bunch of shooters but have lacked someone to instigate the offence. Hopefully someone will emerge.

College basketball has completely changed. Gone are the days of recruiting players and developing them over 4 years while giving them time to learn a system, coaching today is about how fast you can get 5 strangers to learn a basic offense and play with some chemistry. Two completely different skill sets in a coach, very few schools have maintained a culture of the former and it is a huge early season advantage for those who have. This change in NCAAB has made the first 5-10 games of a season more meaningless than they have ever been.
Note that SLU didn't even run plays (which is becoming more common), they just had a basic open offense that expects players to make reads and create shots off improvised drives and cuts. Our problem over the CSJ era is that we expect the same of our players without having the playmakers to do it. I do think that we have more talent this year than previous years that should result in a more successful season than years past, but writing off our season after losing 2 games to teams with tourney expectations is equally as crazy as thinking we are a potential tourney team.
Hopefully we can get these next two games at home as we should be favored in both games, and get some momentum and positivity about the season going into the rest of our OOC schedule.

I completely missed the St Louis game but from everyone’s comments, it sounds like it was a replay of the Irvine game.
It astounds me to see so many D-I coaches undervalue the PG position. All these coaches are enamored with 7-foot bigs and 6’-7” wings; but without a PG who can put things together and get the ball to these stars, team success is going to be very elusive. It’s like having a car with a big engine but no starter.
We were definitely missing a true PG last year and it really showed. I was hoping one of our new guards would step up to the challenge this year. Based on what I saw in the first two games, it looked like Coach was trying to put Vide in the role. SOMEBODY please step up!
I guess what bothers me most right now is what I hoped wouldn’t happen —- Coach Romar is having an influence on our in-game coaching. You’ve gotta love what he does as a recruiter, but he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the court. What I’m seeing so far this year is exactly what happened at Pepperdine throughout Romar’s tenure —- loads of talent but completely dysfunctional play.
Porter is a stud but I watched him make way too many mistakes trying to force a play during the Irvine game. With his 4/15 shooting against SLU, I suspect the same thing happened. That’s a Romar characteristic. We have a lot of players with strong offensive capabilities. Shot opportunities should be spread amongst those players. Instead, we have 40 shots from just two players.
Yes, the season is still young. Let’s hope the players AND staff can figure out a few things before we face Nevada and CSU.

Nevada trounced Santa Clara by 24 pts, easily handled Washington by 10 pts, and Weber State by 30 pts. If we dont get our act together it will get UGLY very quick.
