Hope I am welcome here. I'm a new LMU fan, secondary to UNLV of course. And the reason is, you guessed, because Coach Bayno is now at LMU.
I don't know how often I'll post as I'm usually posting at Rebel-Net. My handle over there is J. Spilotro (I'm the publisher for the UNLV Rivals site - no, this isn't spam or an effort to get you to come over there.)
I can't tell you how happy I am that Bayno is back in the college ranks again. It's where I believe he belongs. He was just starting to emerge as a good coach at UNLV before all sorts of stuff hit the fan. I don't need to drudge up the past - he made some mistakes. But you know what? Give me good looks, a boatload of money at the age of 34 in a city like Las Vegas and I'm sure I'd make my share of ill-advised mistakes. The important thing is that he matured and took control of his life. And because of that, you guys will reap some rewards.
You'll immediately see your recruiting elevate. And you'll see a staff that works as hard as any - and a staff that has high expectations. I expect that through his hard work and recruiting that you'll see LMU competing for the league title quickly. And save your money, you'll get to go to a few NCAA tournaments.
As a person (yes I know him from when I covered the Rebels when he was here), he's awesome. Probably a little too nice and too trusting. Maybe he's a little more guarded now. But he has a genuinely good heart and cares for his players deeply. I've seen alot of stuff "behind the scenes" that are touching. Like I said, just a good guy all around.
He polarized alot of our fans. Some people flat out hated him, thought he was all glitz, no substance - basically a poor man's Steve Lavin. Others just thought he was an underachiever because he always got talent to UNLV, but aside from 2000 (and even that can be argued), we never reached our potential. Then there were others, like me, that thought he was cut down right when he was getting things started. And trust me, Bayno was used as a scapegoat when he was fired here. Yeah, he did some things wrong here, but the blowhards in the UNLV administration had their eyes on Pitino and wanted to clear the path for his arrival. The timing was good for the university.
What you'll get is a guy who has a lot of potential giving every ounce of energy he can muster to bring a winner to Loyola Marymount.
I think if you exercise a little patience, you'll be happy with the end result.
I'm hopeful that we'll have a regular series with you guys. It wouldn't surprise me. He still has some good friends in Vegas with a lot of pull. I'm going to try and make a couple LMU games this season.
As I said, my postings will probably be rare. Rebel-Net keeps me busy and Rivals isn't crazy about having publishers post on non-Rivals forums. But I do wish you all the best of luck.
And I'm sure you'll be receiving some really good news within the next couple of days.
So long.
