Your 1989-1990 team was so much fun to watch. And they scared the living hell out of me as a Rebel fan.
Peabody and Fryer throwing their bodies all over the place. Kimball going on unstoppable offensive runs. Gathers treating the post like his own personal playground. Terrell Lowery (?) with lightning quick moves and the team just launching long ball after long ball. It left even the fans tired.
We obviously had a great team back then and put an end to your magical/emotional run. LMU scared me more than any team we played in the NCAA tournament. I couldn't sleep the night before. I remember seeing Fryer and Kimble on Arsenio Hall just before or big game and Kimble proclaiming that the Rebels didn't have the gas to keep up with LMU. I thought that might be the case. But the Rebels proved alot to me that day because we didn't slow it down, we ran with you and we just had too much with Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Anderson Hunt and Greg Anthony. Even when we were up 20 in the second half, I didn't feel safe. Your team was just too dangerous. If we didn't win it, like alot of the country, I wanted LMU to take home the prize for big Hank.
What a great season of basketball that was. Not just because the Rebels won it, but there was just some good, fun, unique basketball being played at the time. It was rare for somebody to jump to the NBA early. Teams were more fundamental, the players were more well rounded. I'll always cherish that time.
From time to time, I'll pop in the LMU/UNLV game and sit back with a smile on my face just because of the everlasting entertainment value.
