GoodmanonFox Bill Bayno was hired as the head coach at Loyola Marymount in April. Since then, he’s brought in seven new faces and also filled out a talented three-man recruiting class in the Class of 2009. Bayno capped off the class with the addition of talented Baltimore forward Terrell Vinson, a Top 100 caliber player. Bayno isn’t allowed to comment on Vinson or the other players he’s reeled in from the senior class (it also includes talented big man Edgar Garibay), but he is optimistic about the players he’s brought in this season. Freshman Jarred DuBois and junior college guard Vernon Teel will likely battle for the starting point guard spot. LaRon Armstead, a freshman from California, should get plenty of time and could start at the two. England native Ashley Hamilton, a big-time athlete with an improved perimeter game, will likely get the nod at the small forward spot and talented 6-foot-8 forward Kevin Young should be a fixture at power forward. ``I don’t want to put pressure on him, but he reminds me a lot of Shawn Marion,” Bayno said. “He’s a guy you don’t ever have to run a play for, he can shoot the three and has unbelievable work ethic.” Realistically, the only holdover who should secure a starting spot is that of 6-foot-9 sophomore Tim Diederichs. ``I like him (Tim),” Bayno said. “He’s a five with four-man skills who can play inside and out. He’s tough and plays hard.” Bayno said he’s somewhat surprised at the success he’s had on the recruiting trail, but he made plenty of calls in the weeks leading up to his hire to gauge the interest of AAU and high school coaches who he had developed a relationship with over the years he was in college. ``It’s all about relationships,” Bayno said. “I was overwhelmed by the response after I made the calls.” Bayno knows it’ll be difficult to make a huge jump with such a young group. LMU went 5-26 last season under Rodney Tention, but Bayno feels as though he can turn it around in time. ``We’re building for the future,” he said. “Trying to change the culture. This is like a free year with zero expectations.”

scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=2431577Terrell Vinson had scholarship offers from a handful of high major programs, but the 6-foot-7 forward opted to go with Bill Bayno and Loyola-Marymount. According to sources close to the situation, Vinson committed to LMU late Wednesday evening. He also considered Maryland, Georgetown and Villanova. He took visits to all four schools. Scout: Four-star prospect Terrell Vinson of Baltimore (Md.) St. Francis High School is off the board with an unconventional choice to go across the country and play in the West Coast Conference.
Vinson should elevate the LMU program. Shunning local high major schools Georgetown and Maryland, Vinson has cast his lot with Coach Bill Bayno and Loyola Marymount.
"I got to know Coach Banyo and feel he is very real about his word," said Vinson, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound forward. "He came to me with things that other coaches didn't. He told me things I need to work on, which I appreciated hearing. When I was at their elite camp, showed me things to help me get better going left and finishing, move my feet better and getting off the floor quicker."
And don't think that it was the bright lights of Los Angeles that drew Vinson to Loyola Marymount.
"It didn't matter if the school was somewhere it was cold or warm," he said. "I didn't pay any attention to it being in LA. If coach Bayno had been in Baltimore, then I'd have stayed home and played for him."
Vinson also noted the loyalty of Bayno to his former players.
"I know that Coach Bayno is still helping players out in life who have played for him 10 or 15 years ago," said Vinson. "He is very loyal to his players."
Vinson, the No. 81 ranked prospect in the Rivals150, joins three-star Edgar Garibay and two-star Given Kalipinde as 2009 Loyola Marymount commitments.

biggest recruit in LMU's history so far. I have a feeling we will be seeing lots of recruits like vinson to follow though.
Looks like that dream lineup of mine is going to happen. 2009-2010 we could really be looking at a team that makes the big dance. realistically. But in 2010-2011 if these players progress as they should, the sky is the limit.

yessssssssssss I am so excited for the future of lion basketball. Bayno is a king. I think Vinson is one of the highest ranked players ever to come to the WCC. The only one recent one I can think of would be Austin Daye. Can't wait to see him in Hank's House.
Go Lions

I know that Bayno has alot of potential as a coach, but he has surprised me with his recruiting so far. He's always been a top notch recruiter, but to come in only a few months ago and blaze the trail that he has is amazing.
I'm proud of him. Can't wait to see him build the Lions up to where they are an NCAA tournament.

This is amazing, i really don't know what to say. Bayno is unreal. If you don't have tickets you better get them now so you can reserve for next year.

Got goosebumps reading the below. ESPN Terrell Vinson heads to Loyola Marymount ESPNU 100 prospect Terrell Vinson, rated No. 46 overall and No. 8 among small forwards in Class 2009, has committed to coach Bill Bayno and Loyola Marymount. LMU edged Maryland, Georgetown and Villanova for the 6-foot-6 standout. Vinson joins center Edgar Garibay and guard Given Kalipinde as 2009 Loyola Marymount commitments.
ESPN.com's Recruiting Director Bob Gibbons talked about this huge score for the Lions.
"In the most surprising recruiting happening thus far concerning the Class of 2009, outstanding small forward Terrell Vinson committed last night to Loyola Marymount," said Gibbons. "Coach Bill Bayno has always been a master recruiter, especially during his tenure at UNLV. But, this may be one of his all-time best recruiting coups."
Vinson, who had spent the past two years at Montrose Christian Academy (Rockville, Md.), is now at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore for his senior year.
"He turned down offers from Georgetown, Maryland, and Villanova to attend Loyola Marymount, all because of his deep admiration and respect for Coach Bill Bayno," Gibbons said.
"I got to know Coach Bayno during the past year, and it just came down to the fact that he is the coach that I trust the most to help me take my game to the highest level," Vinson told ESPN.com. "I learned a lot at his elite camp this summer. And during his in-home visit Coach Bayno showed me a list of things that I need to work on, and that really impressed me."
Gibbons said Vinson had and exceptional summer.
"Terrell was one of the top three performers at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in June, and was rated the best wing forward at the Reebok All-American Camp in July," said Gibbons. "He is an exceptionally gifted athlete with a very complete all-around game. He can knock down three-pointers, slash to the hoop, and is the ultimate finisher around the hoop. He always plays with intensity, is a tenacious rebounder and a tough defender."
"In my opinion Coach Bayno and the Lions have gotten biggest steal thus far in 2009 college basketball recruiting," offered Gibbons.

I can't wait for next year, well actually I can't wait for this year either. I don't know what to say this is one of the most unbelievable turnarounds ever. To bring these types of players in after such a terrible season last year is unbelievable. LMU can definitely be an instant contender in the WCC in the years to come as long as Bayno is at the helm.
