To ignore Gather's legacy would be criminal. He died as a LION.

What ^ he said. Anyone speaking against this is obviously not old enough to have seen things back then and would be wise to hold their tongue.

I'm not saying we should ignore it. I'm just saying to rehash it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again makes it more than just something we can honor. It because something we are living in the shadow of. We live in the shadow of it right now. My sister made a beautiful sign once that ended up gracing an entire page of the LMU media guide. And on appropriate occasions, we could chant, "This is Hank's House!" However, it has since been used in inappropriate occasions - like when we are losing really badly. At that point, we are then drowned out by the overpowering chant of Pepperdine fans, "This is our house!" Which, to me, is completely 100% disrespectful of the legacy we have.
I never said ignore it. I LOVED meeting Bo, and I wish I had been able to utilize the number he gave me if the Cage ever had a party - unfortunately, we never did. I think there may just be a difference between honoring something that will forever reign as an unforgettable moment in the history of basketball and living in the shadow, knowing we could never ever amount to something that great. It's a fine line, though. A VERY fine line.
Honestly, that's part of the reason why I'd love to see Bo work for the Athletics Dept. Even if he has little experience, it'd be interesting to see what he could offer Athletics, as a dedicated Lion.
I just wish we could use Hank as inspiration to create our own, new legacy....
If ANYTHING, our players should be going out on the court every day with the thought that they are playing each game for Hank.
And how come they never put a black 44 on the jerseys? I think it's about time they do.
