"Then maybe the question should be: why are we holding these teams to a higher standard than we hold our institutions? "
LOL. Ok.

You guys all make very good points about the Heytfelt situation. LMUtex you are spot on in saying that the athletes are held to a higher standard than the rest of the students in the institution. I think part of that has to deal with the athletes, especially basketball and football players, being the marketable faces of the organization. Sports fans who never get a chance to go and visit Gonzaga or learn about their academic program rely on their basketball program to symbolize what Gonzaga is about. If the Zags top player is suspended for having psychedelic drugs in the car, it is a bad pr image for Gonzaga. If a regular student is caught with psychedelic drugs then no one hears about it.
That being said, I am happy for Josh and his recovery. He has matured immensely.

i believe what should be done with every athlete at every NCAA institution that commits a felony is to suspend the Athlete for 1 year minimum but the institution must allow him to attend classes. This would make it a forced red-shirt year and the student/athlete then loses the ability to use that red shirt year during his allotted four years this way the school and athlete take resposibility

Tom, I like it. Thats what happened to Heyfelt except he was suspended for half a year. He still had to attend classes though and did not get a redshirt year for it. One year is probably better though.

If a player is convicted of a felony, he/she is kicked off the team. No way would a coach jeopardize their neck, not to mention negative recruiting, for keeping a convicted felon on the team. Unless that coach's name is Jerry Tarkanian, or Bob Stoops.
duke, care to elaborate? I couldn't glean any relevance from your acronym. I'm assuming you disagree with my statement that there may be a double standard in place at colleges and universities.
Perhaps a rolling-around smilie-face would be better suited for someone who resorts to aol-isms to get their point across. Regardless, I hope that your next post brings something resembling more than a spitball from the back of the classroom.

I disagree. You offer no evidence that somehow athletes are castigated and have higher standards than the institution when the exact opposite is clear. Just look at the admissions "standards" if you want to start anywhere. But I don't need to go on some ball scratching back and forth with you if you want to keep standing up for criminal athletes and their unfair persecution.

WOW, I posted this topic before XMas and got no responses. But now I see all these posts.
IMO any player who gets arrested whether they are guilty or not, should be suspended from the team until those charges are cleared up.
And all this BS about due process has nothing to do with being a member of team. It's not anybody's "rights" to be on a team.
But too many schools are gutless to do anything like that.
I also think it's wrong for a school to lower admissions standards to get better players.
One of the biggest offenders of this, is Duke. Some of their hoops players wouldn't even have a shot at getting into Duke, if they were regular students.

Wow, fanblade, lionspride.ironlions and ........ the board has really become spicy lately. I'm used to the infighting from you regulars. I have to admit the last couple of years Ive been lurking I'm glad to see you guys can "keep the faith". Believe me with the Pilot's it's not easy at time's either. I'm particular enjoying the "plying on" that the new posters are doing to the ol Zag Fav. But, in my two cent's , he does have much to offer the board. So, hang in there Zag you gotta take some if you want to dish it out. It sound's like your AD and DGM at USF are real knuckleheads cut from the same mold. I'm glad that's one problem we don't have. I tryed to watch the whole UCLA-Lion's game on Fox but had to turn it off ,I think you can understand why? Ironlions why don't you stop by PN and give us a Banyo update? Your brief visits are always appreciated. Let's all hope we have a fun and exciting WCC season to remember! MesaPilot1 *Congrats, on your first win, that's a good start keep it up!
