And we don't need help from the stimulus package from Washington! We have our own leaders in the coaches and maturing youngsters. (And the shovel won't be used to bury us - had to get that out of the way before someone came back to me with it.)
Team is peaking and confident with our big win tonight over USF. Suffocating defense and patient team-play offense are the keys to our late season success - thanks Max and Myke.
Let's set the WCC tournament scene. Top two teams have two byes. Looks like Gonzaga and Saint Marys will finish 1-2.
Portland 3rd and Santa Clara 4th.
Not sure of the format of playoff but perhaps places 3 and 4 get one bye.
That leaves
5 San Diego
6 Pepperdine
7 & 8 USF and LMU ( not sure how to break this tie unless LMU beats Saint Marys on Saturday - not expected but possible and USF might beat Pepperdine)
In any case, we will play either San Diego or Pepperdine in the first round and can beat either.
Then, its Portland or Santa Clara - we can win here too! (I'm an optimist.)
Then, its Saint Marys or Gonzaga - here is where we separate the men from the boys - tough row to hoe with either opponent. Patrick Mills is back for Saint Marys and he is a possible NBA player in the future. Gonzaga is Gonzaga and has too many weapons.
So, we can get to the quarter finals - not bad for a team with our record - and a very promising sign for the future.
In the best of all worlds, we pull two rabbits out of the hat and win it all - Las Vegas oddsmakers would be pulling hair ouy of their heads in this scenario - and make it to the NCAA tourney - might get Terrell Vinson's attention. How likely is this when the Worthy-Knight team just missed their chance - not likely. But stranger things have happened. We have some talent on this team.
Go Lions!
