CollegeHoops.net has started its "144 Teams in 144 Days" analysis and already has covered #136 UCSB, #124 Wyoming, #121 Santa Clara and # 120 USC. We'll no doubt get a preview of Gonzaga, St. Mary's and Portland, Notre Dame, Montana,Tulsa and Long Beach State in the top 144. That means potentially we'll play 16 games against the top 50% of the teams in the country.
That's not an easy schedule.

It's sad that a good milestone for the LMU program would be to crack the top 144. Another good milestone would to at least be the highest ranked school with Loyola in the name.

It may be sad, but it's true and your ranking is based not only by who you beat but who you play. We could win against all the other teams with Loyola in the name and still not make the top 144.
The real milestone is to have a winning season and that will be tough for a new, young team like we will have this year.

Boise State checked in today at #105. That another Top 144 team on our schedule (We play them at the Montana Tournament). They're ranked #3 in the WAC pre-season polls.

Add Long Beach State at # 101. Dan Monson has done a very good recruiting job and while they will start four sophmores and a senior, they're projected to finish high in the conference.
Our schedule gets tougher and tougher but Long Beach's looks like suicide.
Before we meet them, they get Pepperdine, Notre Dame, West Virginia and two others at the 76 Classic at Anaheim, then Texas and Utah State. After playing us, they go to Kentucky and Duke.
Looks like Monson is adopting the Gonzaga strategy of "we'll play anyone".

Add Portland at #88 - and we still have not seen the rankings for Montana, Tulsa, St. Marys and Gonzaga. I'm sure they will all be in the Top 100, which means we will play 11 teams in the Top 144, five of them twice. The schedule looks better than it did at first glance.

Maybe we should add a second (away) game with the Academy of the Arts to insure another win? ???Thanks for the updates oldestlion. It will be a good year next year for LMU basketball.

Here is another plus for the ND team Tyler Hansbrough's brother from Purdue - from ESPN Insider:
Ben Hansbrough, Notre Dame: The younger brother of Tyler is one tough hombre, and his shooting will be used to help fill the void left by Kyle McAlarney's graduation. With 173 3s made in just two seasons in Starkville, expect Hansbrough to chuck nearly twice as many treys in the Irish's potent offensive style. Scott Martin, who transferred from Purdue, is a solid face-up 4 who will probably play some 3 as well. He will add another experienced dimension in Luke Harangody's last season in South Bend. For 20 years, Notre Dame did not take four-year transfers until Matt Doherty got the administration to bend its rules for Ryan Humphrey. The school will be happy with the decision this season.

Tulsa gets the #38 spot (favored to win their conference) and Gonzaga a disappointing #31. We're playing a ton of games against the Top 144, starting with #105 Boise State.
No St. Marys or Montana in the Top 144. Mills loss was evidently too much. Collegehoops.net rates Santa Clara higher at 121.
Sagarin should give us a very high strength of schedule ranking.
