I am in favor of adding SU because it would bring in a natural rival and give the conference a little bit of a counterweight to the California schools. However, if the WCC expands to 10 teams it makes scheduling a problem for all sports and particularly would limit the mens basketball team in some of its non-league scheduling.
This may not set well with some, but I have previously written that maybe the WCC should think about dropping somebody in favor of Seattle U. Let me make the argument that while there are several WCC sports, it is primarily a basketball conference, secondarily in soccer and baseball. Basketball is the sport that makes some money for the conference and the members.
If Seattle U commits to a new basketball facility (a pre-requisite to membership), then you have to ask some questions about the crappy War Memorial gym at USF, and what I see as an ambivalent attitude about D-I sports there. LMU and Pepperdine have basketball gyms that on TV look like high school gyms. SMC has at least committed to building a new basketball facility.
Tough position to take, but maybe the conference members need to ask themselves some tough questions about what they want in their athletic programs. Do they want to commit resources to high quality programs, or do they just want to putz along and just show up? If the answer is the latter, then maybe they ought to do right thing and drop out. And maybe the conference presidents need to ask each other some tough questions when they get together for drinks at the annual WCC social.
