I didn't really know what Zappos.com was exactly but this seems like a good move.
I thought it was interesting how the WCC commissioner talked about "growing our Las Vegas- based basketball championship". Sounds like the conference tourney there will be a long term goal.
HENDERSON, Nev., (September 8, 2009) - The West Coast Conference (WCC) and its multi-media rights partner, IMG College, today announced Zappos.com as the official title sponsor of the WCC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. The three-year deal, effective through the 2011-12 season, marks the WCC's first-ever title sponsorship.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Zappos.com will receive category exclusive marketing and promotional rights, along with associated radio, television, Internet, print, signage, and hospitality rights.
"We are thrilled to welcome Zappos.com to the West Coast Conference team as the title sponsor for our conference basketball championships," said Jamie Zaninovich, Commissioner, West Coast Conference. "We have found the perfect partner for our most high profile event thanks to the efforts of IMG College. It was clear from our first meeting with Zappos.com management that they shared a common vision for growing our Las Vegas- based basketball championship."
"Zappos.com is excited to be the title sponsor of this great event," said Alfred Lin, Chairman & CFO/COO, Zappos.com. "The WCC and its institutions always put on a highly competitive tournament and the energy and buzz it generates can be felt not only in Las Vegas, but around the country. Zappos and the Conference share a belief that anything is possible with enough passion and determination. It's what drives us a company to continually up our own game from selling shoes to becoming a leading online retailer with a wide variety of products."
"We are honored to broaden our partnership with Zappos.com to include the title sponsorship for the WCC Basketball Champshionships in Las Vegas," said Dan Shell, General Manager, IMG College - West Coast Conference. "This partnership makes a great deal of sense on many levels, as the West Coast Conference and Zappos share many of the same ideals and philosophies in building their respective platforms. We are eager, both IMG and the West Coast Conference, to help Zappos connect with the many passionate WCC fans."
In addition to its financial sponsorship, the WCC and Zappos.com will partner with Soles4Souls to challenge each West Coast Conference campus to collect the most shoes from December to the end of the conference basketball season. The gently used shoes will be distributed internationally through Soles4Souls to individuals in need.
New shoes, donated by Soles4Souls and Zappos.com, will be delivered to at-risk youth from the Clark County School District and the After School All-Star program in Las Vegas during the WCC Women's Basketball Championship Final.
The WCC Basketball Championships are set to be played in Las Vegas for the next three years.
