Jeff Goodman has a excellent blog that I check at least twice a day. He is always has great stories and the most up to date news on college bb.
Today he has a short piece on LMU
GOOD AND PLENTY
Max Good had one nightmare that would hit him over and over last season.
``My biggest fear is that we’d have to finish a game with four players,” said the Loyola Marymount coach.
Good took over just prior to the start of the season after his friend, Bill Bayno, couldn’t deal with the stress of being a head coach and left the reigns to his veteran ****istant.
The injuries came fast and furious to a roster that was thin to begin with.
Tim Diederichs missed all but three games after shoulder surgery. Ashley Hamilton played the first five and then shut it down due a stress fracture in his back. Terron Sutton tore his ACL and never played a single minute and then Vernon Teel, who averaged 19.3 points to start the season, missed 15 after suffering a broken foot.
Good was forced to go with three scholarship players and two walk-ons.
The result: 3-28.
But this year will be a different story. Good, who took over unenviable situations at MCI in the prep ranks, Eastern Kentucky and UNLV, will have 13 scholarship players.
``We’re two deep at every position,” he said.
Diederichs is back healthy and will battle with talented 6-foot-10 freshman Edgar Garibay, who is down to 240 pounds, for minutes in the middle. Teel should get the nod at the point, but has competition from sophomore Jarred DuBois.
Two transfers – Drew Viney (Oregon) and Larry Davis (Seton Hall) - who sat out last season have a chance to start as well. Davis, who is still recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in the spring, will be pushed by 6-foot-3 strong freshman guard Given Kalipinde and Viney should compete with sophomore LaRon Armstead.
The final spot will likely be a battle between Hamilton and sophomore Kevin Young.
``We’ve got versatility and options,” Good said. ``Last year it was just about survival.”
